6.4 mmol ketone reading. Should I eat some carbs?

I am only on day 10 of my keto experiment. I rode my bike hard for 20 miles fasted in the morning. Then ate keto breakfast. 1 hour after keto lunch my reading is 6.4.

I haven’t measured it since Sunday so I don’t know what my levels have been until now.

Am I approaching the ketoacidosis danger zone? Should I eat some carbs to slow down ketogenesis?

Also I am feeling pretty crappy today. Not sure if that is related or not.

Describe? If it’s headache / nausea, eat some salt. It’s more than likely an issue with electrolyte balance, as is common on a diet low in carbs.

As far as the ketone reading, you’re not adapted yet, your body has no idea what to do with all these ketones, so they’re spilling into your blood and urine like CRAZY. Unless you’re type 1 diabetic, don’t sweat it. They’ll go back down once you adapt to using them.

Highly unlikely. If you rode your bike hard for 20 miles then your body had a huge energy demand on it. No surprise that you created a ton of ketones. Try measuring some other time when you havne’t exercised. Ketoacidosis happens when you have no insulin to stop ketone production, as long as you have a functional pancreas it just won’t occur.

You would need to know your blood glucose reading as well…

On another note, dehydration will also elevate your ketone levels…

Drink more water, relax, then drink more water.
