50 pounds lost.....lots more yet to go

(Mike) #1

Ive been reading this place from time to time so I thought Id introduce myself. Im a fifty eight year old bachelor that lives by myself and started eating low carb five and a half months ago and went full on keto four months ago.I have chronic pain in my lower back and was taking ninety milligrams of morphine and forty milligrams of hydrocodone a day and spending twenty hours a day in bed because it just plain hurt to do anything.I also have sleep apnea , insomnia, asthma, gout and high blood pressure the doctor said I was pre diabetic.

A year ago the insurance company told my doctor that they were no longer going to cover any pain meds and the doctor told me that he would no longer prescribe them. I was scared and pissed off …but in hindsight it might have been the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. I knew if I kept doing the same things I had been doing I wasnt going to improve so I asked my brother to bring over a exercise bike he had so I could start trying to lose some weight. I weighed 335.

The exercise bike has helped ( Im up to 30 minutes a day ) but what has changed my life was the book he gave me with it …Grain Brain by Dr Perlmutter. I started eating low carb that very day. There was only one small problem…I had no idea what a carb was or nutrients or macros I made many mistakes so while I made some progress it was slow. I went to the website Dr Perlmutter. has looking for advice and that was the first place I saw the keto WOE.

This is exactly the change I needed a hard and fast set of guidelines and list of food that I can eat. I am not a good cook but Im doing the best I can at this Im down 50 pounds and Im only taking 15 milligrams of hydrocodone a day. Im off the high blood pressure meds and I feel so much better.

Thx everyone,

It really helps having a community of other people going through the same things you are and supporting each other. I went to see my doctor yesterday to get a review of my meds she was supportive of me going keto and everything went good…I have been to a lot of different medical providers and it felt good to leave feeling positive for a change. It just reaffirms that I am finally making positive choices in my life.

Heck yes, Mike. :slightly_smiling_face:

58 years old here too (born in March) and I began at 340 lbs., so quite similar. While not a ā€˜magic bullet’ for me, ketogenic eating definitely made for less joint pain, inflammation and swelling. Back pain can be such a trial - ten years ago I had two infected vertebrae in my back, and it resulted in pressure on the spinal cord. Going over a little bump in the road - man, I was seeing stars and being amazed at how ā€œaliveā€ with pain parts of the body can be.

You’re getting better at cooking - we learn by doing, eh? :sunglasses:

I am so amazed and touched by these type of contributions. I am 56 and lost 18 lbs since September. Although I do not have the same health issues I am feeling so much better and so excited about this WOE. I thank the stars for all the Doctors who have dedicated their lives to fighting the ā€œcarbā€ system. These forums are my inspiration and although I am alone in my family doing the keto hustle I do not feel alone in the ā€œstruggleā€.
You got this Mike. I will be watching for updates on your progress. YAY !!!

I haven’t checked in for awhile but I just got back from another doctors appointment and thought this would be as good a time as any for a update.

I used to hate getting on the scale when they first check you in but not anymore! in the eleven and a half months since I started this journey Ive dropped eighty pounds. The last time I saw the doc she said that I could continue to get fifteen milligrams of hydrocodone for as long as I thought I needed it you should have seen her face when I told her I only wanted her to refill it at seven and a half this time and that this would be the last refill that I think I will be needing. I honestly think it might have been the first time a patient asked her for fewer opiods.

She was impressed with my progress and asked me if I would like to speak to a group of people suffering from chronic pain and tell them what has worked for me. I said that I could do that…I really wish I had found out about this woe long ago so if I can help even one person it will be worth my fear of public speaking.

I still have a long way to go but it feels good to be seeing some results and being able to do things that I was beginning to think were no longer possible.
