5 pounds in 24 hours, really?

This is crazy. I weighed 233.2 yesterday morning. I decided to have bacon, sausages and eggs for breakfast, for a change. I normally IF 24-ish, sometimes 18/6 so no breakfast. That evening I stayed at a hotel and had a Chipotle steak and carnitas bowl with low carb fixins. I also had 2 homemade keto brownies earlier. That was it for yesterday.

This morning I had breakfast at the hotel - eggs, 2 pork sausage patties, and a half-length chicken sausage and black coffee. I got home, went and hiked my mountain (2.9 miles). Weighed myself afterwards and it was just under 228. I confirmed it with another scale. How can that be, 5 pounds in 24 hours?

Tl:dr Is it possible to lose 5 pounds in 24 hours after not IF’ing?

Much of it is likely water weight fluctuation.

But 5 pounds in 24 hours? That seems like a lot.

There is a phenomenon called a “whoosh,” involving a sudden lost of weight. Apperently the body prepares for it, then lets the weight all go at once. I lost quite a bit that way last August. I was really angry; I thought my scale was messing with me. It turned out to be real, however. Be prepared for these sudden changes. Apparently, fat cells fill up with water, in order to stay the same size as they dispose of fatty acids, then they let the water all go at once. It’s a weird experience, huh?

Not really. Not on Keto which acts as a diuretic and is naturally dehydrating.

I’m with @Anniegirl9 and 75% water loss probably, especially if you didn’t rehydrate after your walk. I have seen this exact thing a couple of times. The next day or two will probably stabilize and leave you with a pound or two victory.

Weight really does move around. It’s not all that unusual for mine to vary between 4 and 5 pounds over the course of a busy day. I’m pretty sure it’s variations in water mostly, … or a good BM which can be at least a pound, maybe a little more… and I’m fine with that. It’s life. It’s what happens to many of us humans.

It’s fun to see the scale go down. But if you really want to pay attention to a scale, you might find keeping an average of some kind a little less frustrating, at least if you’re one to get discouraged with every time the scale goes up a pound.

I like to keep track from one day to the next and see where I am. But really, a few pounds up, I know I’m probably retaining water. A few pounds down, I’ve likely been working outside in the heat and have lost some water. I like it when those lows keep poking just a bit lower but that happens over time, more like week to week or maybe month to month. Daily fluctuations are more like noise. Interesting perhaps, but nothing to get excited about.

But that’s just my take…

All sounds legit. I’m down yet another 4 pounds, totaling almost 10 pounds since Friday. I have been hiking and sweating a lot more (been a humid weekend in Phoenix). I thought I was drinking enough water.
