I have been doing Keto for about 7 weeks and have been “peeing purple” consistently since about day 4. I am very strict about keeping my carbs under 20 net, and my protein moderate (between 80 and 90 grams per day and typically at the low end of that range). I started TRE about a week and a half ago and found it easy so last week I did a 40 hour fast. While I was fasting I noticed that my ketones essentially evaporated on the pee stick. Once I started eating again they came back and I was peeing purple once more. Today I started another 36 hour fast and now at about 17 hours in I again saw the Keto stick show nothing. What is up with this? I do drink a reasonable amount of water, black coffee, and green tea, all clear and unsweetened. Any idea why the urine Keto sticks are registering zero?
36 hour fasts and urine ketone strips
Your metabolism is beginning to use fat efficiently. And is no longer spilling out wasted ketones in the urine.
It is one of the signs of becoming fat adapted. Most of the very wise on this forum will tell you to stop buying the pee sticks and save your cash for bacon or butter at this point.
Good job to you.
I can say from experience, the pee strips are a waste of time. My peetone readings were just like yours. I either barely registered any or they were purple.
Your body is using the ketones when you are fasting, so there are none left to turn your stick purple. This is a good thing! KCKO
Time to get rid of the stix, once you become fat adapted you will rarely get a reading other than ‘trace’, which is the best news that you can get on this WOE
