26 T1D wants to change

(Amber Harris) #1

Hello everyone,

Please excuse any typos. I’m on mobile but moving on. My name is Amber and I’ve been Type One for 4~ years since I got sick one summer. Definitely a surprise for me. It took 1-2 years to completely get through denial and misinformation about my disease. Initially I was treated like a t2 with pills for a month before I was told I was t1. I was in my prime college life but thankfully I lived a pretty decent lifestyle. No smoking, drinking, etc. I’m average weight, maybe 10-20 lbs overweight at most because I ate very little and now just maintain mostly and I developed a food aversion due to the anxiety of carb counting and blood sugars etc.

Moving forward I got a CGM IN March of 2017 and my A1C went from 8 to 6.1 and then my insurance got switched due to a job change and I had to swap from Novolog to Humalog with would not work with me. I’m aug I was at 7 and felt devestated. I gave up for a while and researched a lot of diets and I always saw Keto but I kept wanting to go vegan or fruit based due to videos I saw online and because Keto scared me since I couldn’t find information I could easily understand about it.

Now I’m ready to seriously sit down and try this diet as a lifestyle me devote my time and effort to it. Money isn’t necessarily an issue for me as I think I’d rather give up random extra stuff for better control and peace of mind.

My old endo wouldn’t take me seriously and ignored my questions and took 6 months to see so I switched recently and with that switch I decided my lifestyle needed a change to. Online I saw there was a community here of diabetics and specifically t1ds so I really hope to build connections and a library of resources for my journey. Thanks!

There are T1’s T1.5’s and T2’s who have become T1 (killed their pancreas) and some keto MD’s so plenty of info, experience and support here.

If you still have your CGM I hope you have time to post your experience going Keto. I have a very T2 friend (heading to T1) who is scared to do Keto until they get a CGM so they can see if they are going hypo or hyper as they change their diet. Unfortunately, they are not pushing their insurance to get one. Showing them someone using one effectively to manage their keto journey might be a good incentive.

Best of luck with mitigating your T1 as much as possible! KCKO!

I do still have one and I will definitely use it to document and help steer me forward. I would be too scared to do it without one since I could see my trends. I’m pretty confident about my basal amounts but after reading many people were accidentally covering incidental carbs and not realizing it I’m expecting to need to do some changes. Thanks for your kind words!

Welcome! There is a T1d section in health that you might not be able to see with the Newbie status.

I’m in my 19th year. Last c-peptide was zero.

With this way of eating you can have normal blood sugars.

Congrats on getting your head around this early!

Thank you all for your kind words and for resources. I’m happy to find like minded individuals at any rate! Keto isn’t well known where I live so it’s exciting to see a well read community to educate myself in. Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately I can’t see the forum yet. But I’m patiently waiting to join it!
