2025 Maintenance check in

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #1

I’m reviving this old topic. A lot of us are still in maintenance and want to stay there and sometimes it is good to know you are not alone in your efforts. .

I have had a so so year, put on a few extra lbs. but fasting and a stricter use of lower carb foods is getting me back where I want to be. I realized I was getting carb creep up because of too many summer veggies and fruits.

How is every one else doing?

I’m maintaining too, have had some off plan days but fixing this with EFs, keeps weight on track but do notice the aches & pains, so would like to do better for health reasons!

I’ll hop in. Weight-wise, I’m in range. Took me two years to lose the extra weight … slowly. Would like to stay there. I do feel pretty solid, though. I could drop up to 5 more pounds and still be good.

I have some health things that would benefit from ketones, though. Thoughts on this? How does fasting work in maintenance? Should I up my fat?

You could try upping the fat. Assuming that helps up ketones, some people believe higher ketones = less hunger, for instance. There does seem to be a pretty good set of evidence that higher ketones = better outcomes for people with mental “disorders”, like depression, bipolar disease, etc.

Also, I believe some people do better with higher fat. I did a test with high animal fat, and it did seem like I had more energy. My problem is that it’s hard for met to eat higher fat, as a lot of fat I don’t like or it causes me issues. (Suet, for instance.)

And I’ve always wanted to do a test of high protein, low fat, and high fat, low protein to see what would happen. Never have been able to do this, though.

I did a lot of fasting to get at goal and stay there for the first year. Mixed the fasts up, lots of OMAD, 36 hrs. and some 3/4/5 days. I’m female and that worked out great for me YMMV.

After many yrs. at goal weight, I did add a few lbs. then did OMAD and 36 hrs. fasting to drop back to goal. What has been different for me is I used to lose on a diet and then regain and keep weight on no matter what I did. I have been stable for many years now and even with this blip, I am right back where I want to be.

For me, shorter fasting keeps my ketones up, after 36 hrs they can drop. On a day to day basis, I eat lots of protein, moderate fats, and low carbs. I get less hungry but not everyone does, some need more fats, but I found upping protein worked better.

Experiment and see how you do with more fat over a week or so. As we are all different in our needs you have to try things to see what works best for you.

I’ve been in maintenance for a few years but this year’s interruptions to life seem to have broken that. From January through early August, I was in the range of 212 +/- 2 pounds or 1% while the scale’s accuracy is +/- 1/2 %. Now I’ve drifted up to 220.

Because of replacing a broken bathroom sink, I’ve drifted into a one day fast. I’ve drifted too far from doing that once a week, too. As usual, I had some HWC in my coffee and a cup of hot tea later. I might be at 2 or 300 calories today. Zero carbs.

I managed to forget to come back to add a conclusion to this post from Thursday evening. I continued the fast until Friday late morning, like the 40 hour fasts I used to do weekly (roughly Wednesday night after dinner until Friday at lunch time). I kept my salt intake higher by making some salty lemonade Thursday evening, and had no muscle cramps or pains.

And just to be completely A-R and correct a mistake nobody is going to care about, the time sink wasn’t, “replacing a broken bathroom sink” it was replacing the faucet on the bathroom sink.

Achieved my lowest weight for 7 years now, hard to stick to keto over Christmas but will go into an EF afterwards… I did actually throw away some marzipan (shop bought, I make Christmas cake for Mum & other family) as it seemed to sweet, definitely a NSV!

Congrats on the 7 yrs. Wishing you continued success in the New Year.

I just looked and come spring, I will be at my 9 yr. milestone. Hurray for both of us sticking to it.

Really not sure what would have happened to me if I hadn’t found hf/lc eating.
