100 days of fasting

(ennui) #20

I’m on day 52 of what I expect to be around 120 day fast.I have 30 milliliters of heavy cream in my coffee in the morning and about 30 cals worth of bone broth and vitamins and minerals every day.I drink at least a gallon of water-tea-diet soda every day.I still feel good, and my numbers from the lab looked good the only thing thats a little out of wack is my urea levels are elevated and my BUN is low.If I start feeling bad or I get bad numbers from the lab I will start refeeding I’m doing this to lose weight and it is working. I’ve lost over 60 pounds since 10/27/2018.I can deal with this hunger easier then the ravenous hunger I get after my blood sugar peaks and then crashes after a carb binge.

Barbieri only lived to be 52 after keeping the weight off all those years?

(Bob M) #22

It doesn’t say why he died.

(Chris) #23

This is the one thing all the articles have in common. There’s zero story behind this. As far as how he was after the fast, all of his bloodmarkers were great, he went on to raise a family. For all we know he got hit by a bus. Or for all we know he came down with some crazy un-tested-for deficiency for fasting for a year. It’s impossible to tell or speculate. It’s also a big risk to fast for 100 days unsupervised when you can get the same result from multiple 5 day fasts with healthy refeeds in between.

That pubmed article of 50 days fasting:

“Substantial water and coffee intake was noted (8–12 cups of coffee daily and 2–3 bottles of water daily).”

8-12 cups of coffee a day? Holy crap. That’s going to throw off some blood work.

Hi Ennui –

Losing 60 lbs and while fasting 52 days is rather impressive, congrats on the results.

I’m a supporter of IF, and actively practice it, but have only gone as long as 70 hours. I certainly believe it is an effective aid to help lose weight. However, I believe IF is most effective for weight loss, and good health in general, in the context of shorter, frequent fasts, combined with low carb eating and an exercise/fitness program.

Part of the reason I say that, once your fast is complete, what are you going to do to maintain what you’ve achieved? Many of us have lost weight in the past. The trick is keeping it off. The challenge becomes making good choices on a consistent basis and practicing self discipline.

The truth is, with this approach, you really aren’t developing any new behaviors or lifestyle habits. Its entirely possible you go back to living your life the way you did before. And I will be the first to say I’m guilty of that exact behavior. I’ve done a million crash diets and gone right back to the wrong foods and bad habits.

At the end of the day, you know what is best for you. I sincerely wish you success. I just feel that EF is not a good long term weight loss strategy. To me, EF is the equivalent of a crash diet.

That’s tangoing with suicide, period!

You”ll never make it past 20 days especially without blood monitoring (intense medical supervision) after that, even if you make it that far!

BTW: same type of autophagy and loss of body fat your seeking can be achieved by fasting for much shorter stents in intervals!

(Mike W.) #27

But if something is good, more must be betterer!

(Bunny) #28

”…Barbieri took supplements that provided potassium, sodium, and yeast. He drank only “non-caloric fluids” including sparkling water, coffee, and tea. …” …More

BTW: The yeast (Nad+) is what kept him alive! Missing one little tiny detail like that could cause you to lose your life?

(The amazing autoimmune 🦄) #29

The yeast? That is interesting. What did the yeast provide?

(Bunny) #30

Has around kazzillion vitamins in it plus Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)…

Probably non-fortified brewers yeast is what he used? Or possibly non-fortified nutritional yeast?

Those are all natural (organic) not processed man made vitamins (micronutrients)!

(Bunny) #31

Troll Alert! This whole scenario is just simply a dumb idea, forget the flagging, the admins should delete this whole entire thread? What he is talking about doing is too dangerous without a proper medical and scientific support team? His discription is lacking in any sensible research or basic nutritional knowledge and has no scientific value?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #32

This person has issues.

#34

Yeah, so not true

(Bunny) #35

I suppose if your on a suicide mission it would be “not so true” in your own mind? And Drop Dead Fred is your best friend?

Fasting 100 days? Really?

Image Source: New York Post: No matter your size, “The longer you [fast], the more risks you take,” Fung says. “One is refeeding syndrome, seen in people who are slender already,” as well as malnourished prisoners of war. With refeeding syndrome, once patients reintroduce food back into their diets after long periods without eating, “the phosphorous in their blood can go into their cells, leaving them weak,” says Fung. The shift in electrolytes can cause cardiac failure and even death.

At day 5 he was feeling great. At day 28, he was so weak that he could hardly get out of bed. NOT smart. This is NOT something that I would advise. The Daily Mail shared similar concerns in its own article. …” - Dr. Jason Fung

(Running from stupidity) #36

Well, it’s a stupid concept designed to simply maintain the status quo, so it’s best ignored unless you’re part of the class that requires the status quo to be maintained.

Also, your comment probably shouldn’t have been made under that dictum, eh?

Beautifully put

There is some good and dubious advice in the thread. There is also the far-too-frequent descent into childish name calling sadly.

I am closing this thread down because it has run its course and is veering way off it now but mostly because you need to get medical advice and supervision before even thinking about attempting such a fast. Unless you are able to physically be under their supervision, IDM will not permit such a fast. I am not even sure they would if you could be an inpatient - you would have to ask them. Regardless, I would speak to them about joining their fasting program and do this the sensible way. That way you will gain the tools you need to fast safely and productively for the long-term.

Fasting is a great idea and I am sure you will benefit from it greatly but done the right way. Launching into a 100 day fast is the wrong way. Please speak to your doctor at the very least. We can’t and won’t condone such a plan on this forum.

but fasting really has nothing to do with anorexia.
