100% dark chocolate. Too good to be true?

(Mike W.) #1

I found this a while ago and have been eating, let’s call it “a bar or so a week :joy:”. Is it really as low carb as it looks? It’s from the UK if that makes any difference. It almost feels too good to be true…

How does this dark chocolate have so many carbs?
(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #2

Yeah Trader Joe’s started stocking this last year. It’s good; I think the carbs listed are NET carbs, FYI. But it does scratch the itch, especially with a drop or two of stevia.

I get the cacao nibs, and chew on them or crush them to put in things.

(Mike W.) #4

So total carbs would be 10g?

(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #5

My guess is yes, but you’d have to look up what the UK’s nutrition box standards are.

#6

That looks like a US nutrition label. Total carbs includes fiber, so to get net carbs you subtract the fiber from the total carbs = 2 g per serving. I know from another thread the Brits all think this is a silly way to label it.

Oh wait, that’s being sold in Britain? I guess I stand corrected. The way the nutrients are listed are how we see it on all our foods here. Total carbs (6g) - fiber (4 g) = Net carbs (2 g)

I thought your labels were different?

(less is more, more or less) #7

That looks correct to me. I ignore net carbs. 6g is one-quarter of my daily carb intake goal, so this would be a rare treat, but good to know about.

That’s even better than what I’ve been eating. I’m going to have to look for that at TJ’s.

(Joe) #9

I hit this up too. Keep it to one square though.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #10

Umm… I feel guilty admitting this now, but usually have two squares. And I top with either a half tablespoon of no sugar added peanut butter or marscapone flavored with vanilla, cinnamon and a drop of Stevia.

It’s my dessert.

But I’m still within all my carb levels because the rest of my day is practically zero carb.

(Joe) #11

Screw guilt girl. I saw your before and after post. Keep rocking it. If you don’t enjoy life skinny living ain’t worth living.

(Bunny) #12

Mmmm!

(TJ Borden) #13

Even though it’s a UK product, it looks like they followed the US label format (note that “fiber” is spelled correctly). I’d read it as 2 net, 8 for the whole bar. That doesn’t sound crazy too far off for 100%

This is the info for 100% from Ghirardelli.

I don’t think super dark (so low carb) chocolate is kryptonite for most people but, I wouldn’t pop open some low carb wine on the same night I got a 10-pack from Amazon.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #15

That is a U.S. nutrition label, because the product is for sale here, so it’s total carbs, not net. I ran a comparison between this label and the label on my box of Baker’s Unsweetened 100% Cacao, and with the servings normalized to 100g the quantities are consistent, though not identical.

Edit: I also ran the two Ghirardelli’s bars through my spreadsheet, and got similar results, despite the added sugar in the 92% (5.9g/100g).

(Alec) #16

Hmmm… a matter of opinion!:see_no_evil:

(Robert C) #17

Or location? :sunglasses:

(Allie) #18

Yes it’s good stuff

(Mike W.) #19

Thanks everyone. I shall keep indulging

This is the montezuma label from a UK bar, as you can see, carbs listed are net, to get total you’d have to add the fibre number too. I eat loads of this stuff and view it as almost free
