Well, my wife and I are 1 month Keto today! Just wanted to post. I read these forums every day. If you’re new, Tons of great advice. I’ve developed some “favorites” of people that comment. I take screen shots of comments to read back on. Ok, I’m weird. So, here’s where I’m at…
47 male 5’8"
1 month ago–201 lbs
Today- 193
“goal weight” 180ish?
Pretty muscular so not trying to get to 150 or whatever the “BMI” says to be at.
I feel great. My wife and I had a scale problem the first couple weeks. Weighing in every day. It was suggested to put it aw2. We did but my wife was “sneaking” weigh ins and it was driving her to depression. I actually had to put it in my car. (We got issues).
We are tracking and staying in macros. Keeping vitamins and minerals in line as well. Healthy fats: coconut oil, avacado, macadamia nuts, ghee, ext. Love the pink Himalayan salt. Really helped with any Keto Flu symptoms and tastes great. Also broth. I Have a cup every day. (Almost like my coffee ritual.)
So, I am trying to keep all this focused as a keto “lifestyle”… Not a diet. (It’s hard not to get wrapped up in the weight loss". My “mind” wants instant results.
So, my “measument” are great. Better than the scale. And some before and after pics. See big difference in 1 month. My clothes fit MUCH better. Down from size 38 to almost 34. 36 is more comfortable but I fit into a suit from years ago last week I needed to wear. Both my wife and I had pretty bad GI issues before Keto. (really uncomfortable gas and bloating). It is for some reason completely gone. For both of us. After about day 3. It sure why but doing Keto for no other reason that that is 100% worth it.
Also, people who haven’t seen me in a few weeks comment… Wow Bill, you look “fit”. (So, not sure what “fit” means. But I’ll take it.)
The reason for this long rant was mostly for me. (Because the “slow” scale results can get me down) . I wanted to check in on this thread and also encourage other newbies to hang in there. Long term results. And focus on all the non scale victories.
Thanks to everyone who posts regularly on this. It really is helpful.
1 month today. Checking in
LOL, I wonder what your neighors might think… you walk out to your car, pop the trunk, lay a scale on the ground, weigh yourself, put the scale back in the trunk and walk back inside the house.
Congrats on all your success so far. A scale is definitely not the best measure of keto’s reward and it’s good to read that you get this.
Sorry to break it to you but you have Scale and Non-Scale Victories there.
Sticking to the plan and down a healthy 8 pounds in a month (that included the holidays) so close to your goal weight is awesome.
You must be pretty muscular at 193 and a 34 inch waist - the next 13 pounds may get that much harder but, it seems you have things well in hand (if you have been reading a lot, you know the things you might try if you plateau before then).
The single thing I would do if I were you is get a DEXA or dunk tank body fat test.
You know you are muscular but, I think you might be guessing on whether 180 is good (who knows, you may get to 180 and want to keep going).
But, if I were in your shoes, I’d want to know if 180 is 20% or 15% or 10% body fat and estimate where I really want to try to maintain from there. As far as I know, for most, keeping much under 15% (depending on age) is a pretty consistently high-effort-lots-of-planning maintenance situation.
Ha! Wouldn’t stop me - I would buy an extra scale and hide it. Be forgiving if you find a new scale hidden in the sock drawer.
Haha. I will be forgiving if I find a hidden scale. I pulled 180 as a goal weight out of thin air. I was in the Marine Corps Infantry 25 years ago and left Parris Island boot camp I was 155lbs and in the best shape of my life. My highest weight was a year ago, I was 225lbs. I run regularly now and do a light workout every morning. I will look into that test down the road possibly. I think I may just not have a goal weight for now and just enjoy the benefits of Keto lifestyle and the weight loss will be an added bonus
Huge victory in only a month. And I’m with you on the GI issues getting better on keto too.
Great report. Thanks for posting it!
congrats, bill. reading this post made me happy, and unexpectedly motivated.

Thanks Alex. “Writing” it made me more motivated. The scale is a horrible thing… Lol. Wow, can it mess with the mind. If I think back on the last month, if the scale was never invented… Everything would have been amazing. (lost inches off waist, clothes fit so much better, feel completely different, not “hungry” all the time, bloating and stomach issues gone ect, ect). But the stupid scale tells my mind that Keto is stupid and doesn’t work. INSANE. This forum is great.
You and I are both 47. In the beginning my goal weight was quite a bit higher than where I ended up. I started at 235 and I had never gotten below 205 over the past 30 years. 205 came and went pretty easily and it just kept coming off. In maintenance for the past 3-4 months at 185. I’m 6’1” and this is my post pubescent weight in 9th grade. I never thought in a million years that I could be where I am. My point is this. Imagine yourself at the healthiest time in your life. It is likely that you will be there again if you follow the principles. It’s an amazing woe that has given me a renewed outlook for my future. Love your haircut btw.
Your OCDs with scales are nothing compared to mine - I have 4 sets of scales! One Digi & one Doctor’s Style mechanical in the bathroom, another mechanical for the office, and a other Digi as a fail safe backup if all the others break.
