Your thoughts on a requirement to go out of ketosis

Anyone see this article from Dr. Davis (author of Wheat Belly):

While I think that many people can benefit from Dr. Davis’s recommended diet, I think that post was out of line. I have been on low carb now since January 1, 2014, and the vast majority of time have been in ketosis. I also have heart failure (idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy), and ALL the research I’ve done indicates insulin resistance and high carb intake as causing or exacerbating heart failure.

Do I go out of ketosis? Absolutely. I’m like Carl and have relatively low ketone values (<1.0)…unless I really concentrate on high fat or fast 4+ days. So, if I eat too many vegetables, eat any sauces my wife makes (paleo), minor amounts of salsa (very infrequent), etc., I’m out of ketosis, if ketosis is defined as BHB=0.5. I personally find it very easy to get kicked out of ketosis and quite difficult to stay in. Even eating near zero carb, I can get kicked out. Also exercise has strange effects: sometimes it increases ketones and sometimes can decrease ketones. I haven’t figured out why this is.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you “have” to go out of ketosis? If so, how often?

(Note: I will go out of ketosis sometimes when I know I’m going out. For instance, both our kids went to sleep away camp–first time ever, and my wife and I went to a dinner and I had a slice of cheesecake. I knew this would kick me out, but the rest of the meal was keto. And sometimes I know I’m going to celebrate.)

I thought the real purpose of nutritional ketosis was to become fat-adapted. It would seem to me that as long as we remain fat-adapted, we’re fine.

I don’t have time to go into the studies Dr. Davis links to, but it will be interesting to see what they have to say. I can see failure to grow being the result of insufficient protein, for example, but I don’t see how insufficient carbohydrate could cause that. I look forward to seeing what the authors of that particular study observed.
