Xylitol kills dogs!

(Cindy) #1

This is mentioned in several threads throughout the forum, but usually within the comments and not as a main title. Because so many ketoers use artificial sweeteners, I thought this deserved a title of its own.

Please, if you’re a dog owner, do not use Xylitol as a sweetener. There are many, many others on the market now, so keeping this one OUT of the house is better for the life of your dog. If you buy keto friendly snacks or have any given to you that are sweetened in some way, again, make sure it’s NOT with xylitol. Some peanut butter also has xylitol in it.

Also please don’t feed sugar or any artificial sweeteners to your dogs. Keep out of reach of canines please.

Dogs get very ill from eating chocolate as well, I think it can be fatal if they gorge on enough of it.

Definitely fatal in the right amount, which, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t much. Haven’t had a dog in about 15 years so I’m rusty though (was a kid back then).

All kidding aside, I’ve never understood the complete fear of Xylitol simply because you have dogs. I have a 5yo, I also have sharp knives, caustic chemicals, tools and guns. All of those could kill him if I actually allowed him access to them… But I don’t. I have high cabinets, outdoor storage, locks and safes. That keeps a human out, what kind of dogs do you people have?

I think we need to have a house meetin’ y’all.

chocolate is harmful to dogs in really large quantities. it’s a diuretic for dogs. its not good for them, but it’s not automatic death sentence.

“Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.”

n of 1 I have a 40 pound dog who ate an entire giant bakery cookie cake and he’s ok. although now I know he can Houdini things off the counter.

xylitol is dangerous for them:
“Just three grams of Xylitol can kill a 65-pound dog” …just be a responsible pet owner :dog: it’s also 12 degrees outside. bring them in.

I mean some people are irresponsible. I dont know how to fix that.

Thanks Jenny.

You don’t normally cook with caustic chemicals. Since xylitol could easily be in a keto dessert, it’s MUCH easier for a dog to get to it than guns, knives, etc. You could simply drop a piece on the floor, spill a bit in the kitchen, etc.

I’m certainly not a fearful person. I don’t see hazards around every corner. But I do think xylitol is a serious enough risk that I don’t keep it in my house.
