WTF? Low Glucose AND Low Ketones...What gives?

(Bill Calhoun) #1

First-off, I ADORE this forum and the tribe within.

I’ve learned more in an hour’s reading than I’ve muddled through in over 1.5 years…thanks for that team.

Okay, I went out and grabbed the FreeStyle blood meter.

I tested both glucose and ketones. I’ve been doing a reasonable deal of weight training and HIIT Assault bike (and IF) for the past 2-years. Always hovered around 11-13% bodyfat (will try to do a one-off attempt at 6-8% within the next 3-months, just for the challenge).

I got into fasting and keto-science because I’m fascinated by the repair and thwarting of chronic illness, dementia, stem cell rejuvenation, endurance and all the other non-weight loss reasons.

Here’s where I’m drop-jawed: Today I took my first test and my glucose levels are: 4.1mmol/L
and my ketones are: 0.4mmol/L

Am I reading this wrongly?

I could sure use some educated cold-water on what’s going-on.

Later–

What time of day did you test and what had you been doing before you tested?

(Duncan Kerridge) #3

4.1 is a normal glucose level, not low.

I tested at 3pm. I’d just been relaxing (off-day for working out). Had breakfast of eggs and bacon and bullet coffee (not that it needed to happen so, I’m gonna stop the coffee)

Oh, I’d been seeing 60,70, etc. (online) Perhaps those are different value-measures? So, if that’s ‘normal’ it means I still have a ways to go before entering ketosis?

(bulkbiker) #6

That is a different measure used in the US to measure blood glucose.
To convert mmol/L to mg/dl multiply by 18.

MarkG, you’re a life-saver. Thanks for that.

Here are the BG comparisons.

Awesome, KK. Thanks

You’re on the cusp of nutritional ketosis. You may wish to lower your carbohydrate and/or protein a little.

Gosh, I hope so. Thanks steak. I’m on-it!!!
