Worried and scared

OK my therapist read me my liver reading …as gp didn’t. …regular reading is 33 for liver. Mine was 1688…so I quit everything for 6 days got blood work done…liver now 330.so I’m not going to take tyenol at all .no biotin gummies I’m not going to take b complex if biotin is in it I guess.I’m going to get 50 plus multi vit I think because in Dec I’m 50.so basically 6 days of nothing I’m not doing anything gummy.I’m better but still have to be careful. I will NOT quit keto.I won’t .

(Empress of the Unexpected) #22

I will certainly not be taking a b complex before my blood draw. So glad your tests have improved. There are many ways (in my opinion) to do keto. All the alarmist articles say it will kill us. I say “Salmon and broccoli for dinner will kill us???.” If you are concerned, you can certainly cut out some of the saturated fats and add more fats like avocados and olive oil, and some nuts. As you get fat-adapted, you can take in fewer fats from your diet and use your own stores for fuel. I know I will get hissed and booed for this, but one can even successfully do a vegetarian keto diet. I am having blood tests done in three weeks, and am wondering if I am overdoing the bacon and steaks. I know, not a popular idea on this forum. Just some random thoughts.

Good news on the drop @Lisambc  I was taking biotin for hair/nail health but quit when I started eating more complete protein - my hair/nails have remained healthy.

(Lisa marie t) #24

I’ve got ultra sound appt tomorrow for liver.
It makes me upset aboUT the biotin n b complex because they aren’t cheap.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #25

I’ll be sending you good thoughts!

OK so new update.Dr’s are saying I have gallstones.and my gallbladder is full of gravel n stones.and needs to be taken oUT asap!..my response…uh no…nope .give me meds til I talked to my mom.she pUT it off n ended up ruining her pancreas…n made her sick in hospt for months.
My liver…I got new blood work so will see.
All 3 Dr’s are trying to say it’s keto that caused it. N to quit or just add a potato here n there.I said it wouldn’t be keto then.
There’s been no scientific proof has there that connects this to gallbladder or liver.right?

(TJ Borden) #28

Not that I’ve ever seen/heard. Are they able to explain the mechanism in which they believe keto would cause it?

Do a search on here for gallstones and read the posts. Some people claim to have had success with a malic acid protocol and have passed a whole bunch of gallstones. Basically for some weeks you drink something daily containing malic acid which is the main ingredient in apple juice. Amazon and other places sell Malic acid pills so you do not have to drink the apple juice which will ruin keto, then you do some type of protocol that will help you flush the stones over a 24 hour period, Or so they claim, I have no personal experience and have no medical or scientific experience. The risk if this really works is if you do not do the preparation properly you can have a stone get stuck and then you may need the gallbladder removed immediately. Supposedly the preparation is the most important. ACV is also supposed to help with gallstones. Again I have never tried and am not familiar with the protocol so do some research on it before you think about trying it.

https://www.dietdoctor.com/gallstones-and-low-carb has an article about what causes gallstones

If you are prone to gallstones any dietary change can trigger an attack

From somebody like myself who once had a fatty liver is why I would stay away from processed foods like mayonnaise or anything with processed vegetable/plant oils/fats (polyunsaturated fats) in it (bottled stuff) especially hydrogenated vegetable oils or trans fats (e.g. the ever popular soy bean oils used at almost all restaurants) you get from heating it and stick more with unprocessed extra virgin monounsaturated (e.g. olive oil) and saturated fats (animals)!

Natural unprocessed polyunsaturated oils from plant fats that have not been heat treated, chemically extracted and are cold pressed, extra virgin, like from e.g. whole avocados straight from the tree are good for us and has not been processed!

The secret to losing weight and getting rid of the fatty liver is being aware of what kind of fats/oils you are choosing to eat or allow to go into your body on a ketogenic diet and the freshness and quality thereof?

That is one of the very very small pool of reasons why some people do not lose weight on a ketogenic diet, I have no proof because there is no research data to support my hypothesis but I am willing to bet people like myself and Dr. Michael Eades are 100% correct?

I used olive oil and in fact olive oil mayo.not used everyday.never heard of soybean oil?

(Bunny) #34

Rancid hydrogenated soybean oil is what is most likely being used to cook your food in when you go out to a fancy restaurant to eat! That’s bad news for the homeostasis of your entire ketogenic diet, especially your liver if you want to lose weight?

Bottled cold pressed extra virgin olive oil (depending on how long it has been sitting on a shelf/warehouse i.e. not rancid/oxidized?) would be a better choice?

Example of unprocessed or close to it, is frying your food in bacon grease or organic grass fed butter or non-hydrogenated pig lard or grass fed non-hydrogenated beef-tallow. In other words don’t use plant fats/oils to cook with or eat stuff that has been cooked in it or processed products that contain it, period!

Sorry for all the edits, I am thinking as I write!

#35

As noted above, soybean oil is in absolutely everything on your store shelves. It may be in crackers, dressing, marinades and of course, oil for frying.

Olive oil is great as a dressing or for very low heat sauteing for high heat I would recommend avocado oil as it has a much higher smoke point or animal based oil

(Bunny) #36

…and we wonder why everyone is obese and pre-diabetic etc… …just add lots of refined sugar and lots of carbs; especially heavily refined\processed ones and you have an epidemic?

(Lisa marie t) #37

I don’t drink alcohol at all don’t smoke n quit all vitamins liver is good but had 2nd gall bladder attack n ended up in er for 7.5 hours I am most likely going to have gallbladder taken out I’m trying to decide if I should do low carb until after surgery I’m stressing out because I don’t want to start eating more carbs I haven’t used sugar is 15 or more years

(Doug) #38

Lisa, I wouldn’t change much beforehand, thinking that keeping your body on an even keel would be a good thing before surgery.

That said, they’re darn good at taking out gallbladders these days, and as far as “surgery” it’s really not a huge deal, usually. Laparoscopic techniques mean just a few small holes. I was up walking and going to the bathroom on my own the same day.

I had one gallbladder attack in January 2015. Wasn’t sure what it was, but it made for a really bad weekend. July 2015 had another one - worse than the first, and in looking up stuff online it sure seemed like the gall bladder was what it was. When I breathed in, it really hurt on the right side of my abdomen, up pretty high - just where the gallbladder is supposed to be.

My wife and her mom have also had their gallbladders removed. None of us have had to change anything. Not everybody gets away without having to do some things differently, but I’ve never even remotely regretted not having a gallbladder.

(Jennibc) #39

DEFINITELY don’t start having sugar again! That’s just poison. There is no need for it in the diet at all. I even think there is likely no need for grain either.

Would love to know what one of the keto docs would have for you. I’m only about 2 hours away from Dr. Berry so would probably seek him out if I had such an issue. I know there are others. But someone who is more in tune with the low-carb and keto lifestyle and also being a practicing MD would be attractive to me.

Not sure where you are but it’s something worth considering if you haven’t already.

Wishing you good luck and good health!
