Worried about calories? Don't be

(jilliangordona) #1

Just wanted to share my recent experience with over feeding. I am 5’5’’, 180pounds, and 25 years old. After reading The Obesity Code, and learning more about how little Calories In Calories Out matters to weight loss, I did some self experimentation. I worked hard to eat about 3,000 calories the last few weeks after feeling constantly tired on keto.

WOW what a difference! I lost weight, gained muscle, and have SO much more energy!

If you haven’t felt that extra spunk on keto, or are feeling tired… think about upping those calories.

what are your macros? 60f 25p 5c? whats ideal

(Allie) #4

I’ve been feeling loads better since I stopped counting and tracking too. Better muscle gains and still losing fat too.

I have decided to purposely not track anything this month, to listen to my body and eat to satiety. I am not certain that I will the same outcome because of my age (67 next week). I would love to hear from any post, post post menopausal women out there who have experience with this.

I don’t count or track anything, to me the “what” and “how often” is a lot more important than “how much”. I control my calories by eating more or less meals a day, and also what I eat. I find all meat=lower cals and added dairy=higher cals.

(Marie Dantoni) #8

I’ve been tracking for most of the past year. I think I have a pretty good handle on macros because I eat one meal a day, and cook mostly meat or fish and above ground vegies. I need a break from tracking.

I tracked and measured for 2.5 years then decided enough was enough and just trust my body now. Every so often I get the idea to track for a day just out of curiosity, but the idea never lasts long :joy:

I read (well listened to The Obesity Code) loved it and totally believe in the fact that weight and Obesity is a hormone issue not calories in calories out.

My plan is to up the calories if my weight loss stalls, of course keto related calories.

After eating strict Keto for 3 or 4 months. 20 total carbs or less I wanted to experiment and see if could still lose weight without tracking and I did…Once I got to where I think my body wanted my weight to be I just slipped right into a maintenance loop. My body was taking care of itself. I was just eating the way I knew I needed to. It was the first time in my life I had actual freedom from food. And the only time in my life that maintenance wasn’t a struggle.

(jilliangordona) #12

20g carbs, 120g protein, and about 200-250F

I work out a lot, hence the high protein

Marigrace

Amen sister! A bit nervous about not CICO. I would love to know if it would work for me, but don’t want to sacrifice my loss. Any older gal making the "eat all you wish " work???

I’m giving it a month…we’ll see.

(Keto in Katy) #15

I never track anything, it’s too much work. I’m too lazy to even fini

(Mark) #16

Really ? Dude that’s really interesting

(jilliangordona) #17

I should also note I plan to fast soon to balance this out. I am trying to really utilize the feasting/fasting balance

Then I guess I’m a negative Nancy…
I have to chime in because I think it’s irresponsible to tell a group of overweight, metabolically deranged folks that calories don’t matter. There are too many people that embark on this diet expecting too lose massive amounts of weight within a few months, are then subsequently disappointed and leave discouraged. A ketogenic diet is not a magic bullet.

I’m 5’9 and 175 lbs, insulin resistant, my highest A1c was 5.8, my BP runs ~90/60, my lipid profile is normal, resting HR ~55. So I’m overweight but relatively mildly deranged. I’m providing all this detail to give context to what I’m about to say:

I especially want the older women to hear this. In my experience, calories do matter. If I over eat (regardless of macro breakdown), I will gain weight. YMMV.

I fear that it is a problem for me as well.

I am very interested in Marigrace’s n=1 though.

I gave my age and weight for just that reason. I am happy you chimed in, there are a lot of contradictory thoughts on the forum because everyone responds to things different.

I wasn’t losing counting calories, and I also am insulin resistant, and over weight. I didn’t lose weight for over a year on keto. This worked for me, and I wanted to share if there was a chance to help anyone else.

Additionally, eating an excess of calories will rev up ones metabolism, regardless of derangement. WHAT that person eats is the problem, as well as how often they eat.

(Marie Dantoni) #21

I get all the arguments against cico, and if anybody on the planet would prefer to not ever count a calorie again that person would be me. I have yet to hear from any woman my age who has had success with this approach, but I’m willing to experiment…at least for a while.

(jilliangordona) #22

I think the key is balancing with fasting… or that would be my best guess. Best of luck!!
