Sometimes when i do a test i see i am in ketosis - but only just, im on the barely pink square, just after the beige neg one - obviously i’ve eaten a bit more carbs than i meant to - but would then eating a bit of fat or protein make sure i dont go out any further?
Or even push me back in?
or must i just hope it hasnt gone to far and wait until the carbs have ‘worn off’ kind of thing?
i am veggie so main proteins are cheese and eggs
thanks
Will eating a bit of protein or fat, when you've almost knocked out of ketosis 'push' you back in?
Welcome to the forum Djinn
Sorry, it doesn’t work that way…
But make sure fat and protein are your main focus. Carbs should be as low as you can keep them, not as high as you can push them. It gets easier.
Yeah, this is more the way it is. You have to metabolize the carbs. If you go over you can get back in ketosis faster with heavy exercise and fasting. Those will get you back in quicker. Or depending on how much over you went you could just go as low as possible the next day and try to do better in the future. That’s the hardest part of doing KETO vegetarian style. It’s hard to get enough of the right protein and vegetables are carb sources. The more vegetables you eat the more you’re pushing your carbs to the limit. Good luck.
thanks, yeah its not that i had a pizza or cake, just a few too many cashews or not measuring something properly, or something along those lines - and yes veg are hard to ‘assess’ for carb content as their size can vary so much. so far ive always managed to stay in ketosis but based on the sticks, i dont suppose it’d have taken much to tip me over … this is what im trying to assess i guess, im back in now, but i want to figure out the limits so i know for the future
Cashews aren’t the best nuts to eat on keto, they have the highest carb count of any nut I know of. Pecans, walnuts, macadamia and hazelnuts are better low carb options. Avoid peanuts as they are legumes and not nuts. For that matter cashews aren’t either although we refer to them as nuts.
I recommend buying a $10-15 digital kitchen scale and weigh your vegetables before washing them. Being that vegetables are a bigger part of your diet than many you should use an app to track your macros to make sure you’re in the ballpark. You can evolve your habits knowing what works with a record to refer back to. I like Cronometer, it’s free. It’s nice to have a record of your progress but don’t get lost in obsessing about perfect macros or going over a calorie number.
Finally you should know that the sticks are of little help in accessing your state of ketosis depending on how long you’ve been eating ketogenic. They indicate one of three ketone bodies being spilled in your urine unused. As your body becomes better at utilizing ketones for fuel the color will get lighter for almost all people. Those sticks are designed for Type 1 diabetics to have an instant check if they feel they might be developing ketoacidosis so they can get to a doctor. They’ve been marketed at the KETO community for financial profit on a popular diet trend. If you keep your carbohydrates under 20g. you can be assured that 99% of people will be in ketosis without any need for test confirmation. I have been doing this a little over a year and never tested once. I would rather spend my money on better food.
thanks, im sort of doing dirty keto - im only 9 stone, and i have PCOS which can causes slight insulin resistance, which makes it difficult, hard to tell how that is affecting it…
but also i have hEDS so i dont want to lose much weight too fast - if i stick 100% to full keto, i lose a pound a day and at my size, thats too much - i did it a few months ago and ended up with loose skin!
and the hEDS means there are issues with that ever tightening up again. So i want to lose about a stone, but not fast.
at the moment i just want to keep my body in ketosis all the time, but not necessarily losing noticeable weight dailty.
i am finding, if a do a pure protein day, just cheese and egg, next day ive lost a pound, then next day or two i eat a few nuts, berries, etc and i dont lose, but im still in ketosis.
its an awkward one, hence me doing some trial and error type stuff to account for my situation.
It’s pretty unlikely you’re loosing 1lb of fat a day, even at first. Tons of stored water yes, removal of bloat because of the old diet yes, but if your metabolism is so fast you’re loosing a lb of fat a day, then you could probably have your carb count at 50-100g a day and still spend most of your time in ketosis. Most people can’t pull that off. Wouldn’t worry about some extra carbs if you’re really running that fast.
whatever it is, it is too much too fast, i only lost about 11lb but it was over about 2 wks - and my skin was looser than ever, so i stopped and put some back on, the PCOS makes me prone to weight gain, so i need to work out my levels
