Why weight gain after one day

(Brandy Harris) #1

I am just curious. I did keto before and the results were amazing. I lost 45lbs… I started yesterday checked my weight it was 170. Today is day 2 and I weigh 173… why would I go up? Can that be normal I know it’s day two but it was a little concerning.

Welcome to the forum, Brandy.

If you do just basic Keto, 20 grams or less of carbs a day, NO Sugar, adequate proteins and healthy fats, and drink enough water and your Electrolytes, it will work =). Sometimes the scale is annoying, I try to only weigh once a week because of this. Your body can be retaining water, and sometimes just after we have had a coffee/tea/water it can show up on the scales as a pound or two, so not an accurate reading.

If you just stick to the above basic Keto and be patient, you will be doing great and feeling the benefits soon enough =).

Hi @Brandy_Harris,

This is nothing to be concerned about.
Fat changes (up or down) are just a few ounces a day.
But, when you suddenly change your diet, your body will simply want to hold on to a different amount of water - this can mean pounds up or down in a day.
You could have lost 4 ounces of fat and held on to an extra 3 pounds and 4 ounces of water.
Losing fat is a win - water is unimportant.

I did Atkins in my 20’s and lost 45 lbs in three months. This time, in my 40’s no such luck. Things are different in my life and more damage has been done in the past 20 years. But stick with it and be sure you’re not missing hidden carbs. You already have a head start because you have experience with it. And remember, the scale isn’t the only way to track. Take measurements too! Best wishes and welcome to the forum.

Thank you so much. I will now only weight one to two times a week lol maybe once at the beginning and once at the end. I am sticking to only 20 grams. But today and yesterday I was under for both and my calorie intake has been under 1200 as well. The reassurance is helpful and I’ll keep it in mind!!

Eat more, you need more calories then this =). If you are just starting back, start out with 3 meals a day, and eat enough!

I use cronometer.com a free download to keep track, and I find it very useful.

Using the scale in the first few weeks usually hurts either way.
Here it is “why is the scale going up”?
But also, when someone sees 7 pounds “melt” off in the first week (weighing weekly, again just the water weight change) they become very upset when they then stall (or gain a little) continuing to eat the same way they did the first week.

The first months of Keto are about getting your metabolism to be a fat burner - before then, quick weight loss will happen pretty much only if you calorie restrict (which is bad).

There are some links here that you may want to read - just some stuff to keep in mind given this is not your first run at keto. https://lowcarbrn.wordpress.com/2016/10/25/why-is-low-carb-harder-the-second-third-fourth-time-around/

1200 may be way too little.
The body will naturally go into survival mode and hold on to everything at such low calorie levels - the body feels it is being threatened with famine.
Keto is about eating to satiety to let your body know that there is no famine, it can use fat stores and (without glucose) it will! (After becoming fat adapted!)
