Why have I dipped out of ketosis? ('Newbie')

(Aaron) #1

Hello. I tried to get into ketosis few times but it never worked because I was fat phobic and afraid only moderate protein (I do weight training). This time I went all out and tried to keep my net carbs at 20 grams or less, my protein at about 60 grams and plenty of fat. I’ve also been weight training which helps glucose disposal. This worked and I was delighted to record my first ketones yesterday.

Unexpectedly my brother’s and nephew wanted to go out to dinner, but I managed to find a keto salad.

When it arrived I was rather unnerved by the huge bowl of green leaves with a number of cherry tomatoes and the fact that feta cheese might have lactose in it was doused in generous amounts of olive oil so I hoped for the best full stop indeed it only seemed to deepen my state of ketosis so I felt really confident as I woke up in the morning.

I tested my ketones before lunch and they were a satisfyingly Deep Purple, indicating significant ketosis. I had lunch with celery, olives, cheese, eggs, nuts, 2 tablespoons of sauerkraut and some low carb dressing; I also had a coffee with 1 teaspoon of cacao powder in it as well as MCT oil. After lunch I decided to check my ketones again and I was disappointed to see that there was no colour at all. I checked my blood glucose to see if that explained it but it was only a little higher than fasting levels really - 5.4mmol/l. I was quite far into ketosis before lunch so I really can’t understand what wiped out the ketosis postprandially. There was a little more protein in my lunch then I would permit myself usually, but no more than 30 grams so I don’t really understand what happened. Any ideas or is this completely normal? I’ve only been 100% keto for 3 days!

Thanks
Aaron

I wouldn’t trust those urine strips. KCKO! Cherry tomatoes have some carbs. The feta cheese won’t be too much. There will be some in the greens, but not too many. Was olive oil the other dressing?

It’s normal. You’re just burning all that are produced. With people who train, it’s not uncommon to only show ketones in the late afternoons. Don’t get hung up on Ketones. Just keep carbs low and eat plenty of fat for the first several weeks.

It may just be that you’ve become keto-adapted enough to stop spilling ketones into your urine.

My answer depends entirely on how long you have been eating Keto @Asphara?

Yes just olive oil; thanks for taking the trouble to reply!

Thank you everyone! You are all very generous with your answers! I’ve only been keto for 3 days Katie .
And yes people, I mustn’t get hung up about the keto strips. So long as I’m eating & feeling right he cares?
Thank u!

Aaron, exactly what I thought.

You have been Keto for 3 days and you are using ketone test strips which measure how many ketones your body is WASTING, not how far in ketosis you are.

Considering you are in deep purple, you are making good head way, your body is producing lots of ketones but dumping them in your urine because your body is not yet fat adapted and does not know how to effectively use those ketones it’s creating.

Continue doing what you are doing.

If you are at three days, I would not worry about it. Your body has not fully adapted, and you can fall in and out based on a lot of things.
