Why do some people lose so much weight so quickly?

My wife saw a post on Twitter where someone started keto on 1/1/21 and has lost…100 pounds. I have seen multiple such posts from different people, complete with pictures so you know they aren’t making it up. It might be a longer time period, but it’s remarkably fast.

Why do some people lose weight so quickly? I’ve never been able to figure this out.

Genetics. And less severe metabolic damage. In my opinion.

I’d say Combination of muscle mass and how much glycogen they were able to store (and then dump) and strictly sticking to a plan and not making excuses when things don’t work as many do. I know I did for a while, and it held me back huge! I instinctively knew better, but wanted to believe my own BS because it was easier.

What was the person’s starting weight, what was his or her weight at the time of writing, and what is his or her goal weight?

We see a lot of people on these forums who complain that their weight loss is too slow. These are usually the people with only twenty pounds/ten kilos to lose. And my impression is that, as I’ve noted many times, even for those “fast losers” the last twenty pounds of fat come off far more slowly than the first two hundred.

I’m at this since 1/21. I’m down 60 lbs. I think my biggest weapon in my arsenal is being steadfast. I do 20/4, mostly OMAD, when I weigh I only record weight loss ( who wants to beat themselves up?), I take the challenges of eating cheap, eating expensive, and eating out, I don’t fear protein, I tracked a lot at the beginning but have gotten all of the crap out of my house, and I’m about to cross a new threshold and get hiking again. I take glucose readings a couple times per week but am looking forward to upcoming annual blood work. I have no thyroid but my meds are spot on. I hate diets so I’m making this forever. If I slip with a lovely piece of fruit I make sure I enjoy it and it’s infrequent. I’m looking forward to group fasts with this crew and I appreciate the wealth of knowledge you all share daily. #kcko

I don’t know if you know about “reversing insulin resistance” on twitter. In 2 years, she lost 106 pounds. Then, there’s seizure salad, weighed 290 pounds in 2017, 135 pounds in 2021.

For my wife, I’m not sure what she saw.

143 pounds for this person:

Took 4 years.

I lost weight the entire time I’ve been low carb/keto except after shoulder surgery (cortisol probably went crazy, as I couldn’t sleep), and when I tried the Croissant Diet. Other than that, I kept losing weight, albeit quite slowly.

Now, I’ve also been gaining strength at the same time, so that’s good. And I don’t mind losing weight slowly, but sometimes I wonder why others seem to go so much faster.

I have a hard time believing it was keeping to 20 grams of carbs every day, as we’ve seen plenty of folks who do that and still don’t lose. (And sometimes I think upping the carbs can kick start loss again.)

I probably fall into the category of have/had a lot of weight to lose and lost weight fast and that last X lbs will be tough camp but I guess I will see. I started keto on 6/12/2021 at 342.1lbs and as of today I have lost 70.8lbs and want to lose 30-40lbs more, but I assume my body will decide that a bit as well.

My first week of Keto I dropped 18 lbs of what I assume was water weight. I weigh myself daily in the morning. That has been a bit of an emotional adjustment watching the daily fluctuations but I created a weekly and daily graph to remind me that weekly (which is when I do my official weigh-in) I am almost always moving downward or neutral even though day to day I sometimes see variations of 2+ lbs.

I track everything I eat, weigh most items with a kitchen scale etc. I used to use the pee sticks and have a keto-mojo but find I use them very infrequently now mostly to check-in. Based on some videos and other readings after I was fat adapted I have allowed myself some “carb-ups” a couple of times a week. For me a carb up in most cases might be 30-35g net carbs (for the day). I have done a special meal with my wife twice in 4 months where I had 100g net carbs. I do tend to have a decent amount of fiber as well and net carbs seems to work well for me.

I am lightly active and walk 5-7 days a week for 25-45 mins. I am definitely not extremely active and I work in tech so sit at a desk most of the day. I have been surprised by my results and they do seem to be faster than I expected and I am not sure why but I am definitely not complaining.

I guess the real test will be seeing how long it takes to drop the remainder. Not really worried as I know it will happen when it happens and I really enjoy this way of eating and do not see it as diet. I realized that a lifestyle change was needed if I wanted to keep the weight off. Never really been a dieter but was able to figure that much out. Going back to what got to 342.1 is not something I have any interest in doing.

It is puzzling. Once I got Keto, I lost 50 lbs almost without effort (220lbs to 170lbs). Of course I had to watch what I was eating and that was an effort. But doing lots of extra exercise, no. It did take nearly a year. As I get closer to a “normal” weight, dropping the last 20 lbs that I would like, is much more difficult. All the charts say that I should be about 150 lbs. But my health is 500% better. I will KCKO, and creep down. If I never lose another pound, it has all been worth the effort.

For big initial losses it’s probably also a result of reversing some severe edema. This is also “water weight” but is additional to the water that is stored with glycogen
