Why do some long-term ketoers still have excess body fat?

obesity
fat
weightloss

So true. In that we are all different, there can never be a rule book; just basic truths to start from. Add to that the fact that our body’s main concern is self preservation, and it will do continual adapting to preserve a safe layer of fat, it’s difficult to find the magic formula to allow us to achieve the body we are content with. Just to be clear, I’m not talking about unreasonable expectations of some kind of body builder competition look, because that puts an unreasonable element into the equation.

Beyond eating these wonderful real foods and avoiding the processed garbage that made us sick, I believe getting plenty of activity and using our muscles is as necessary and normal as fasting between meals. If we’re not addressing all three parts of a healthy lifestyle, we may have more difficulty achieving the healthy body we seek.

I agree and would only add that even with all of the above, it is quite possible that the fat will continue to hang on. I believe in my particular circumstances, I have unintentionally been under eating on a regular basis over the 8 yrs. I have been doing keto. It is so easy to do because of the amazing appetite suppression. However, it can and does have a draw back in that metabolism will adjust to that level. It is a bafflingly difficult thing to nail down.

At very least I have been able to maintain my 60+ lbs loss over the last 7 yrs. (not without some difficulty) and I have focused on the multitude of other health benefits I enjoy. Not to mention that the food I do eat is amazing.

Just listened to Amber O’Hearn on ketovangelist.com. She has been zero carb keto for several years to shed weight, address psychological and medical issues. This was after being keto with vegetables for years, but with these issues still worrying her.

This WOL is a broad spectrum and it looks like there are still other options for us to look into.

The other day Jimmy in one of his podcasts indicated that his next n=1 will include an all meat diet. Amber spoke at his low carb cruise. Maybe no coincidence.

@amber is also speaking at Ketofest and was our guest on episode 44 and she dropped in with Loaded keto Egg Nog on our Cristmas show

I used to be a big fan of his, but over the years he’s flip flopped too many times and just makes excuses for it. He hit his goal years ago and looked great, then started getting lazy packing it on, they claiming he was Paleo which he never was, then some other made up thing, then he started saying he didn’t care about his weight, just how he felt, then he was loosing weight again. Sorry but he was literally the MAIN face of Ketogenic eating for a long time, he did a lot for our WOE bringing mainstream attention to it, and getting a lot of heavy hitters in the industry together, the events etc. We’re all human and a lot of us long timers have released from time to time but when your him, you can’t. He literally does damage to our image when he goes to these conferences and is bigger every year. The dudes are seriously picking up steam lately and I truly believe are on the path to dethrone Jimmy although I’m sure thats not what their intentionally going for as they have lives outside of the keto world.

I think this would be a very interesting point to study and explore. I would wager that many people eat less than they may “need” because of practicing the - eat to satiated. And, I wonder if many people actually over eat not by total caloric need but by overwhelming the body in their feasting meal? I remind myself that Jason Fung MD often expresses: “every diet works, and every diet fails” in his advocacy of IF.

(L. Amber O'Hearn) #107

That would be interesting! I know he’s tried almost everything under the sun. It’s particularly difficult to lose fat when you’ve been obese, unfortunately.

What? Is he not human? He certainly can. Time to stop bashing, just because someone is well known gives no one the right to fat shamed or judged.

He IMPROVES the image of the low carb community if you are intelligent enough and compassionate enough to see that he is being fully honest and human. We need real people. N = 1 we all have our struggles and none of it is anyone’s business unless they choose to share.

Becoming a bit of a well known ketoer myself, I have experienced harsh judgement and fat shaming myself online.

Just. Stop.

Maybe you didn’t read back where a forum admin asked for the bashing to stop? I’m telling you not to bash anyone here. I could let the flag stand, or hide your post, but I’m going to leave it up to you to edit your comment for appropriateness @lfod14, or remove it.

I’m not BASHING anybody, lets not do the snowflake thing, I’m stating fact. He’s openly admitted time and time again that he flys off the wagon and I’m not judging anybody as I’ve done it myself. I’m pretty sure I stated we’re all human and we all screw up, but being Jimmy Moore in his current capacity comes with some responsibility. Would you take advise from a nutritionist (lets pretend for the sake of argument that 7/10 of them aren’t useless) If every time you saw them they were fatter and noticeably less healthy? Seriously! They also mentioned to you that their cholesterol was higher than it had been the last couple years and they couldn’t get it down although they had it much better at one point. Is THAT who you’d listen to for health advise?

If I was telling you the carb eater that ketogenic eating was far healthier than what you did year after year yet I was heavier and more unhealthy every time you saw me, what credibility do I really have? That’s all I’m saying. Perception DOES matter in this world. Dr Atkins proved that one and the diet still suffers to this day simply because of it. Does that effect us personally? Nope. But It’s all the “proof” it took to make LCHF eating to get laughed out of most conversations at official capacities. How many times have you heard the “Atkins, the doctor that kept getting fatter and died” nonsense? People on our side know he died of a head injury, and he was always open about his weight going up because he just loved crappy foods and many of us do too but good luck separating actual fact from what peoples eyes saw for years. Not a good way to promote a way of eating into the mainstream culture. You may not agree with calling it the what it is, but thats the world we live in.

@Ifod14

For your sake, I hope you live a perfect life and never have your life openly dissected by people who don’t know you, but are only “onlookers”.

“I’m not BASHING anybody, lets not do the snowflake thing, I’m stating fact.”

NO. You are stating YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THOSE FACTS."

Here is MY interpretation of the facts:

If it were not for Jimmy Moore, I would most likely be DEAD by now. About 8 years ago, I was sinking fast. My highest weight previously was 460 lbs, with all the health problems that comes along for the ride.

I stumbled upon Jimmy’s Livin La Vida Low Carb show, and listened to all the back episodes. I read. I studied. I waited until fully convinced, then jumped in with both feet. Jimmy was always open and honest with struggles. That helped me see this was for real people, not just the elite, young, buff and healthy dudes.

Opposition to going LCHF came from all around me, including Husband. But I was fighting for my life. I am STILL not at goal, but I have lost - and more importantly - kept off 120 pounds for the first time in my life. Now, due to cancer and other stuff, I have gone Keto.

I run into all kinds of challenges with side effects of medication, making it hard to lose more weight. A hard liner LIKE YOU would look from the OUTSIDE and say I am not a good example of the efficacy of LCHF/Keto. But you don’t have a clue what I have overcome. Not. a. CLUE.

The same as you are not privy to all the challenges that someone like Jimmy Moore faces.

Stop defending your harsh judgements. Get some COMPASSION. Trust me, someday you will hope others have it for you.

Now that I am “older”, a favorite quote is this one:

“When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.” --Abraham Joshua Heschel

This is judgement and fat shaming @lfod14.

The flag stands.

(Solomom A) #112

it’s said: Do not judge people by where they are today but by how far they have come. And more importantly, by what they are committing to their ultimate goal. Jimmy started with Atkins, went LCHF, then KETO and has now added fasting. He is still searching and may find the key one day. He is at where he is not for lack of commitment nor effort. May be he wouldn’t be here at all but for this WOL.

#113

LOL! The word lazy is “judgment and fat shaming”! HE HAS SAID THOSE WORDS HIMSELF! I’m done with your hypersensitive nonsense. Your on a moral high horse at this point. I never said a single word that wasn’t true. I apologize for living in reality. I made it very obvious that I’ve been a Jimmy fan for years and still am I just don’t ignore what rights there. The last thing I would ever do is fat shame a person I used to weight 300lbs and know first hand what being on the other end of that is like. Please stop changing the meaning of what I said to suit your narrative.

Whats funny is out of your false allegations of what I allegedly said it’s me being shamed by YOU, not Jimmy Moore by me!.

Delete the post if you like, I’ve played the Admin Bully game before. i know you always win, but only because because you have more buttons than I do, not for any other reason. Your obviously one of those people that are offended by the direction the wind is blowing, I don’t know what to say to that.

I apologize for being honest, but don’t you dare accuse me of something like fat shaming.

#114

WOW. That was an incredible read. Thank you for sharing that.

(Nick) #115

You don’t sound very remorseful.

#116

This has devolved into a back and forth verbal joust.

I’m locking it for now pending @richard or @carl 's discretion.
