Why are BSL’s still high after 1 year on Keto & 36kgs weight loss?

(DenieG) #1

Help I’ve been Keto usually less than <10 gms carbs daily. Off Insulin after 16years. Stopped Insulin the day Instarted Keto put on Saxagliptin. Sugars improved but still sit around 9-13 mmol during the day. 12 hrs fasting in the morning often 10.5-13.6. I’m so frustrated as I don’t want to take insulin ever again. I have only 6 kgs to loose &’I’m at my target weight. So why the heck are my BSL’s still high.
I’m female in my early sixties. I know about the Dawn phenomenon and made various tweaks like more protein less fats. More fibrous veg and more fat to slow carb absorption. My weight is stuck over the last 3 months as are the sugars. I’m desperate for an answer and to loose last 6 kgs. Keep a strict diary and increased exercise. Any geniuses out there know the answer n
I do intermittent fasting. Done 5 day 7 day and 14 day fasts but just can’t get sugars down to below 8.8-9.5 on a regular basis. I’d be much happier if t could accomplish these levels on a regular basis especially the morning ones.
The only time I can do this is fasting for 5 days or longer. But I can’t fast permanently now can I???
I intermittent fast everyday 18-23 hour either 2 meals or OMAD.
Help anyone who has the answer.
Denie.

Have you ever had your endogenous insulin levels tested?

Think so about 9 months ago. They were on the high side of normal back then. But guess I could have them checked again. Good suggestion. But one would have thought after 12 months strict Keto my insulin levels would have lowered as my liver is completely healed and normal according to my bloods.
Having HbA1c & fasting Sugars done tomorrow so I’m anxious if they late High I’ll be told to take Insulin again. Lol :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Oh OK. I thought perhaps you weren’t producing enough. Hopefully your new blood tests will give you a hint as to whats going on

Have you tried zero carb carnivore for a while or fasting for a couple of days?

I have been experienceing the same things as you, although not as high. My experience was after a month FBG was down in the 90 to 110 range. Then, the longer I was LCHF, the higher it got and stayed throughout the day. I have never fasted longer than 48 hours, and yesterday is the first time I fasted without BS climbing the entire time. It had been so long since I had strung together any randoms sub 100, that I was about to give up. I could almost taste the pizza and beer. After getting the 90 and rechecking for a 88, I dug the strips out and showed 4 on the urine sticks. I have no idea what changed, other than I have moved my lifting up in weight and down in reps. Woke up to a 118, which is 20 or so less than my average lately. Gonna stay the course for a while longer.

Thanks for the suggestion of ZC/Carnivore. I have tried Carnivore but I find my BSLs actually rise. Didn’t do it for more than a week as it scared me stupid. Could give it anothe\r go.
I do find that if I eat <10 grams carbs with higher fibre raw veg like salad leaves. Spinach various types spinach alfalfa sprouts bean sprout snow pea sprouts that combo keeps BSL’s from rising as in it doesn’t spike as the raw fibrous veg slows the absorption and digestion so it keeps BSL’s 1/2 hr to 1.5 hrs after meals.
I find the morning BSL’s are the major problem and they generally don’t come down until 2pm lowest at 6pm and then they rise in the evening. The lowest morning BSL would be at 5.30-6.00am but after that they just keep rising.

As I mentioned I do intermittent fasting already & have Leone 36hr 72hr 3-5 day fasts. 7-14 day fasts. I’m on one medication but been off Insulin since the day I started Keto. As with Insulin and SAD diet BSL’s were often 26-30. Or 470-520 in American numbers.

Perhaps ZC Carnivore might be an option to try again.

Hi there Iget your concerns.
I too have just started dang heavy weights at the Gym. Weig
Hrs and particularly heavier weights seem to be giving me some improvement so like you I’ll just have to give it some time to see if it works long term it’s only been a few days so far so this is another positive habit or tweak I need to try.
Best wishes with your new found improvement and I hope you will keep me posted with yo\ur results.
Thanks Denie.

Just checking back in. I’ve continued my lifting, and have been adding more exercises to my workout. The afternoon numbers are pretty good on lift days, but the old pattern is still there. I am fasting, and was in the 80’s yesterday afternoon, a couple hours after lifting and shoveling snow. I really expected a good number this morning, but my test registered 138. I washed my hands again and rechecked for a disappointing 146. I’m 37 hours fasted at this point, and it just doesn’t add up. Does glucagon register as sugar in the blood? Not sure why this doesn’t clear out and stay down as others describe. Going to try to keep the fast going to see if the numbers continue to rise, or start down.

What’s your HbA1c?

My blood sugar goes up all day from around midnight until about noon, then goes down all day from there until it hits a low around midnight. This is from a year’s worth of data from a continuous glucose monitor. My blood sugar also tends to go up if I exercise or exercise and work around the house, which is essentially what’s happening to you.

I do not think glucagon registers as blood sugar. Glucagon is basically the mirror image to insulin. Let’s postulate a theory. You lift weights. Your blood sugar goes up because you need to replace glycogen in your muscles, and that’s the only way that your body can get glycogen in there. So, your body goes into an intense blood sugar saving mode, trying to up your blood sugar level so that your muscles have this to use. But say your muscle cells are still insulin resistant. Then you have higher blood sugar with no where to go.

Will have to see if I can find studies refuting or agreeing with this. Not sure how many studies are done with both weight lifting and very low carb diets, though.

I’m sure `I have very high insulin resistance. I keep trying to fast, OMAD, etc to lower it, and I’m anxious to get my A1C in a few weeks. The home tests showed me at 5.2, which if accurate, I’m very happy about.(was 8.2 15 months ago) But I don’t understand why, if my BS is so high, how can the A1C be that low in the presence of all that sugar? I vaguely get the glucose sparing, fat adapted ideas. I am interested in peoples’ BG after breaking a fast. The next day, my FBG will be 140 to 150, and take 2 or more days to get back down to my pre-fasted range. If I hit the gym, I can drive it down, but fasting number will be very high again the next morning. Very confusing when other people describe their experiences.
