Who on this forum has been keto the longest?

(Debi) #1

Hellooo, just curious, who here has been consistently keto for the longest out of the regulars here?

I see there are not very many “studies” out there about the long term effects and benefits of a keto diet…so I was just wondering the experience of those who had been consistently keto for more than a year. Can you comment back with answers for me ?

  1. Been keto for ____ years ______months
  2. My favorite things about being keto are…
  3. Drawbacks I have noticed are…
  4. Health improvements I have noticed are…
  5. Here is a link to my fave keto recipe

Thanks so much for indulging and informing me!!!

Edit: Reason for asking
I am coming up on week 14 of being keto (total babe in the woods at it), I prefer to eat plant based (no meat or dairy) - but that is not easy to do on keto - so I have had some eggs, cheese, and a little fish in the past 3 months - but my body really feels stronger and better when fueled mostly on plants…BUT I LOVE not being hungry, the weight loss (not easy for a gal nearing 50) and the blood work results were nice (all sugar related things are very excellent). I am trying to decide if I want to stay in ketosis and try to fat adapt, despite the trickiness of dropping the cheese etc…or just go back to being plant based, but keeping the super starchy foods as special occasion…so carbs lower than 60 most days - which will probably kick me out of ketosis…OR do I commit for a year, so I can adapt enough that I could possibly stay in ketosis and eat 60g plant carbs a day eventually!!!

Again thanks for all your input

I’m far from being one of the longest keto but figured I’d chime in. Hope that’s OK.

  1. Keto for about 15 months now.
  2. Love eating well and never feeling deprived. No more 4 hour hunger monster!
  3. Friends don’t understand. Sometimes limited menu options with others.
  4. No longer prediabetic. Down 70 pounds. Feeling good and get around easier.

THANKS for the reply!!! haa on the wardrobe!!! I have lost a little weight (192 to 164… I seem to only lose 2lbs a week now vs the glory days of .5lb a day!!) I had hoped I wuld lose more, but like I said, that seems to have slowed dramatically now. I think I sleep better too - I suspect I had insulin resistance before starting (unconfirmed, A1C was always fine, but never had insulin levels tested) but I had blood work a month ago and my A1C is 4.7 and everything else is very normal. I LOVE reading about people who had amazing health benefits from diet changes  Being plant based had me fairly healthy before, I do LOVE not craving carbs and sugar now too - so it is easier to make smart food decisions.

I’ve been stalled for the past 2 years… find that a bit of fasting can help pushing through weight loss plateaus so have just begun another 7 day fast. I hope to get to onederland!

(Debi) #7

Wow, I can easily go 17 hrs on a fast, but I tried 18 in week 1 and had terrible GI issues ( you can read all about that, if you look for my first post! :stuck_out_tongue: I have not pushed it since because, being tied to a toilet for random 90 minute intervals is inconvenient!! I have watched several documentaries about long fasts, and I would love to try letting my digestive system rest for a week…I am not sure how to build to it though.

I usually intermittent fast every day for 16 or so hours simply by skipping breakfast and not eating until early afternoon or later. Longer I just eased into first trying 24 hours then extending it each time. I think I went from 3 days to 7 and it wasn’t too hard… I might try some egg fasting if I get really hungry this time…

  1. Basically, around 18 years.
  2. The fat loss and overall health benefits.
  3. Getting too fanatical about avoiding carbs. Limited amounts eaten periodically are necessary for metabolic optimization, once derangement is eliminated.
  4. Too many to list, but I have a strong feeling I may not be alive now if I had not changed. It’s a Lifestyle, not a diet.
  5. Fatty roast beef, blood rare.

WOW 18 years. I agree completely about the lifestyle. So over all are you internal bloodwork numbers amazing after all that time?

I’ve been here one year and on keto
I like the weight-loss best
I miss color and crunch
I’ve noticed that my gout has improved and my eczema has improved
I don’t have very many fancy recipes.
My favorite thing to eat however, is grilled meat on top of greens with nuts, roasted harvest vegetables and bacon. dress with the dressing that’s mayonnaise-based with a bit of sweetener

  • Been keto for 3 years 11 months
  • My favorite things about being keto are control of appetite
  • Drawbacks I have noticed are during social gatherings and at special events (weddings, food oriented holidays) = explaining why I’m not eating my whole portion the special cake, even after I have a taste and say it is very nice.
  • Health improvements I have noticed are: weight loss, mental clarity, reduced pain in joints, calmer mental state in a potentially stressful job, reversed signs of pre-diabetes, nutritional ketosis physiologically and psychologically seems to drive me to be active and get outdoors.
  • Here is a link to my fave keto recipe: eggs in a pan cooked in coconut oil and butter.

  • Been keto for 6 years
  • My favorite things about being keto are: Not worrying about diet and gaining
  • Drawbacks I have noticed are more or less social interactions and explaining why I don’t eat carbs
  • Health improvements I have noticed are stable weight, endless energy and mental clarity
  • Here is a link to my fave keto recipe: No link, cream cheese, coconut oil (cold), stevia and cocoa powder. Just mix them together. You may have to soften the cream cheese (microwave) then put in freezer for a few. Tastes like a chocolate cheese cake.

It’s been years since I 've had a reason to visit the doctor, but last time my A1c was 4.8, my trig to HDL ratio was less than two, and my blood pressure was 117 over 67…
