When Fruits and Vegetables are not good for Health

Makes sense. And perhaps to stretch a meat stew we added some roots to the pot … and in lean times there was more root than meat in the pot.

Fibre. Lustig says that the fibre is crucial to slowing down the absorption of fructose to a rate that the liver can handle, and that both soluble and insoluble fibre are required for this.

Mechanically destroying the fibre by juicing, or commercial processes to remove fibre (to retard spoilage), allow the fructose and glucose to hit the body at once, overwhelming the bodily processes designed to handle them.

As a person that grew up on a farm and now get most of my food from small local farms, I believe in eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, and nuts. I am 77 years old, never hospitalized and my worse illness has been a mild flu. I don’t take any prescription medications. My lab results are all normal. My fasting blood sugar is 88 to 92. My cholesterol is 145. My HDL is 55 and my triglycerides is 50. But I don’t eat processed food, fast food or drink soft drinks. I mostly stay away from wheat. We don’t cook with vegetable oils. In fact we cook mostly with Lord, and bacon grease, or olive oil. I am 6 foot and 210 with a 34 waist. My motto is moderation. In other words I eat like a people did before factory created so called food was advertised and known about.

Chuck, you seem to be doing the right thing. You have been eating fruits and vegetables in moderation’ not over consuming them. You stay away from wheat and processed vegetable oils, processed foods or sugary soft drinks. You cook with animal fats!! And you are eating in moderation for decades and that’s what pays and contributes to your good health.

Yeah, that isn’t a bad diet at all, at least for you. We all need the diet that works for us and it’s not the same.
And moderation - many plants kills moderation for me, the plant carbs mess with me mentally or something.
I don’t see any problem with wheat besides the carbs though, for me personally. Eating a little flour is still way better than eating much vegs and especially fruit as the carb content is way lower and anyway, starch feels much better than simpler sugar. I only try to avoid nuts to avoid overeating (I really must focus on satiating protein to be able to pull that off), otherwise they would work for me. But the right food choice is pretty much individual. Of course there are the problem items for everyone, a bunch added sugar isn’t good for anyone even if some handle it better than others. But normal items… Some are still bad for some of us, at least in excess and moderation is a tricky art. I am quite good at this but not always or regarding everything. Some items must be banned. Most fruits are candies anyway, WAY too much sugar… Fiber or not, it doesn’t feel good when it’s a lot and it’s ridiculously easy to eat a lot of fruit at once especially when it’s whole and raw as it’s most tempting that way to me. (I had some run ins with some super tasty and crunchy apples lately, yeah, I really should forget about the existence of fruit for a while… Normally I eat 10-20g apple at once but I still can go way beyond that, apparently…)
You are better with your normal amount so good for you  I don’t feel unlucky either, some people gets sick when eating as much plant carbs as I do sometimes and I feel okay. It’s still not ideal too often.

I have low cholesterol just like you, mine’s about 150. But we have to be careful of dementia because the brain is cholesterol.

(Chuck) #27

Our brains actually work great on blood sugar. And my VA physician checks my brain function every 6 months. I am not showing any signs of dementia at all. I don’t waste my time watching TV, I read over 100 books a year, I paint, I still take courses and do lots of research. I love going to lectures and my favorite games are mind games. Dementia doesn’t run in my ancestors or family. My great grandfather passed at 107 and was sharp as a wipe. My grandparents were in their upper 90s when they passed. My mother did pass in her late 50s but it was an illness caused by a bad case of pneumonia.
The key is to keep your mind active, keep your body active too. And I believe stay away from processed food, fast food, and desserts with added sugar. Sure fruit is sweet but it isn’t processed. Oh stay away from dried fruit and fruit juices. I do drink pure cranberry juice to help my kidney function.

I do have it on my Dad’s side so I’m aware of it. I take 5 mg Lithium Oratate every day which is an OTC supplement (not to be confused with Lithium Carbonate which is for bipolar).

Lithium Oratate help the brain regenerate so may provide some extra help there.

And even better on ketones.

In fact, the brain requires a certain amount of ketones, because the cholesterol molecule is too large to cross the blood-brain barrier, so it must manufacture its cholesterol from ketones. Not only is cholesterol a significant part of every cell wall in our body, but it is essential to the proper transmission of nerve impulses. It also, if memory serves, forms part of the myelin that sheathes our nerves.

I don’t run from cholesterol, I eat plenty of meat, egg, bacon, and cook with bacon grease. But my digestive system needs the fruit, and veggies. I think keto is great and I eat keto about every other day. My big no is wheat.
