After how many hours of not eating or fasting does the body start to use fat?
When does the body start "eating" fat during fast
If you are keeping your carbohydrate low enough to get into ketosis, then your body is using fat, either in the form of fatty acids (primarily monounsaturates, by the way) or in the form of ketone bodies, which are produced by the partial breakdown of fatty acids. This has nothing to do with fasting, as I understand it, since in the absence of carbohydrate the body metabolizes both the fat you feed it and any excess fat it may happen to have lying around.
@Ketokellie The reading I have been doing says for SAD diet eaters not before 12 hours and maybe longer if metabolic derangement is significant. Less for keto adherents. But again derangement can change that. I’ve had to go to IF 18/6 and OMAD to see my scale start to move again. I’m deranged but strictly keto for 4+ months now.
Maybe someday my insulin resistance will tend back towards normal and I will burn fat in the 12 hour window. I can hope can’t I?
Standard American Diet. Moderate to high carb low fat.
The diagram came from Jason Fung. Here’s an article where the Oxidation diagram it is used.
This diagram is correct if you were eating Carbs previously, and you have ‘stores’ to use up. If you are eating Keto, then you’re already burning fat.
