What's your gateway?

(Danielle) #1

Wondering if anyone else has a “gateway drug”? Do you have a food or place or thing that consistently triggers your fall from Keto? I’ve known about mine for a long time… Pepsi. I love everything about it. The sound of a can popping open. The feel of the ice cold can in my hand. The bubbles tickle my nose just before that first sip (hit).

Just wondering if anyone else has something they have to avoid at all costs - because even a little will lead you astray.

I know I shouldn’t “blame” Pepsi for my lapses. I control what I consume. But sometimes, I feel like it knows when I’m having a bad day or I’m stressed out and it just calls to me… DEWY… just a sip… just one taste… just one can… just one day… just one week… just one month…

So I avoid Pepsi at all costs. Can anyone relate?

Hostess cakes. (Cupcakes, Ding dongs, twinkies, cinnamon coffee cake, zingers, ho hos). Once a month or less I let myself go on a bender and eat them all. Then right back to Keto the next day.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

Anything with sugar in it is a serious temptation, but bread is even worse, somehow. Dad has a fruitcake lying around that has also been known to be my downfall—fortunately, that’s only a seasonal problem, lol!

I cut out foods that have a sweet taste. I have not tested whether this is totally required, but I do tend to get more desire to nibble or eat when I am not hungry, when my taste buds have been triggered by sweetness.

Foods can have small amounts of added sugar and not cause me problems, as long as they don’t actually taste sweet.

As a result, I also don’t eat things that use artificial sweeteners, and have not tried any of the typical sweeteners used in keto-safe baking like allulose or erythritol.

It doesn’t make me fall off keto, but if I start on peanut butter I can’t stop until it’s all gone.

I avoid being around bread and potatoes at all costs. They definitely trigger me :joy:

Whipped cream. Just can’t stop. It can make me fall off keto/low carb, and has done so. Hence the “gateway” aspect.

This is all before my keto days.

I used to think nothing could beat a cold beer after mowing the lawn. Ah, it was soo cold and thirst quenching. So I thought beer is my gateway to doom.

But one time I ran out of beer and only had water with ice. Guess what it was also cold and thirst quenching. It wasn’t the beer that hit the spot at all, it was the temperature of the water!

Instead of Pepsi try something else. I don’t know maybe it’ll work for you too.

My gateway is through my nose. The sight of things like Coke, doughnuts, chips, (non-processed) bread doesn’t tempt me in the least. But the smell of baking bread, cookies or cakes sometimes gets my mouth watering. It’s not irresistable, but it sure gets my attention…

Peanut butter! I can’t resist. It’s supposed to be low carb, but I have trouble keeping to 2 Tbs. instead, I eat the whole jar.

#11

I thought whip cream was low carb and high fat

#12

I like to make it to top off my coffee in the morning

The carb content of HWC can add up. It has 0.4 net carbs per tablespoon, so if you’re just adding a bit to a coffee, it’s minimal. But if you’re adding a cup or two to something, both carbs and calories add up very fast. I tend to use unsweetened coconut milk unless the recipe really needs the fat content (such as when whipping it).

Yes, but I can eat huge amounts, and then I want other yummy things.

Heh

Crikey, it looks bad when you quote me like that. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was highly amused by it, indeed

I haven’t allowed myself even a sip of Dr Pepper in 5 months. I’m pretty certain even one would derail me. I used to go through a minimum of 84oz a day.

Nuts…especially types that are roasted and salted. Peanut butter/ almond butter. Cheese, all kinds I have trouble stopping once I start. Cream sauces.

Buttered toast! I don’t think I can ever really eat that again. Or cookies. Or movie theater popcorn. And I just discovered macadamia nuts and I do not have any stopping power. I don’t really find myself thinking about toast or cookies much, but if they were right in front of me- it would be tough.
