What's new in Keto?

(the cheater) #1

Greetings! I was here a couple years ago and had a very successful run with keto in 2018 (lost about 50lbs). Well, for the last 2 years or so, I’ve gained the weight back since I haven’t been as active or following keto (and I met someone who is a FANTASTIC chef lol). I would occasionally “crash keto” if I needed to lose some weight fast for something.

Anyway, I generally know what I’m doing, but I’m just wondering if there’s anything new in the keto world in the last year or so. I know there’re TONS of new keto-friendly snacks (cheetos, ice cream, cookies, etc.), but I’m wondering if there are any new products and/or science to make the transition a bit easier or to get your body burning fat easier/faster.

Anyway, glad to be back! Fingers crossed for another successful run  My gf in onboard this time - not to do keto, but to support me while I do it - so I feel this will be a productive next few months.

Not much is new, over the few years I’ve been around. Keto still involves eating minimal carbohydrate and staying away from sugar, grains, and starches. Researchers have been talking more about the bad effects of polyunsaturated fats, vegetable oils in particular (since they contain amounts of ω-6 that cause systemic inflammation), not to mention the weird things oxidised PUFA’s do in cell membranes. Eating real, whole foods and cooking with butter, tallow, and lard is still the best strategy for a successful ketogenic diet.

Nope. Still requires an attitude adjustment. Still requires dedication. Still requires effort. No magic.

No answer to your question, just a thought:

I used to be a cook, and I welcomed challenges, limitations, and special needs, at work and at home. If you have a fantastic chef in your life, perhaps they’d like to cook fantastic keto foods for you?

Presumably they can eat the same foods as you, adding in whatever they deem necessary for themselves. I used to do this in my Atkins days – only in reverse. I’d cook a nice low carb meal for both of us, plus a potato (or whatever) for him.

I wish you luck getting to where you want to be.

Words of wisdom. I was thinking the same.

@decreebass Hi, I’m Vic and I am an addict.
I do not believe “Keto friendly” proccesed ■■■■ is good for me. (cheetos, ice cream, cookies, etc.) Are only fuelling my sugar and carb addiction. Its not real food, its the proccesed food industry wanting my money in an evil way.

Good luck the next few months. I hope you change that idea to forever.

I stopped eating processed stuff way before keto but I really don’t think they are sooo useful. If you need your snacks or sweets or something, do them from a few simple proper ingredient, there are lots of ridiculously easy and quick recipes. I found making my own stuff very useful as they could fit my taste and priorities and evolved with me. And in many cases, they disappeared later (much later. I still would eat homemade chocolate every day if I hadn’t tried carnivore but not nearly with the same sweetness as before. it gradually changed).
Other people go cold turkey and don’t bother with such things, they eat some normal keto food and that’s it. It may be way harder but it gives quicker result if the endgame is some simple but great woe without all those snacks and sweets and new recipes. I overcomplicated my woe as many others (at least I never used almond flour to make almost everything  or sugar free syrups. no, I made zillion own recipes I don’t need anymore sigh), I don’t think I had another option before and it was mostly fun but now I appreciate simple. If someone CAN do simple right in the beginning and it suits them, they should do it.
And keto sweets aren’t even okay for everyone. To put it lightly. They can trigger desire to eat more sweets, sweeteners may mess up things… But they may be very useful for others (some kinds, at least, of course keto sweets are very different from each other. I prefer protein rich, fatty and not very sweet homemade ones using just a few ingredients, as close to carnivore as possible). I had such a time, it was a temporal, not ideal woe that had to happen for a while. We should figure out what works for us.

Good luck!
