I’ve been in the keto diet for about 10 months.
I initially lost about about 20 lbs from my starting weight of about 226.
Now I’m kind of bouncing the same 5 up and 5 down, when I really want to lose another 20.
One thing that disturbs me even more is that my fasting blood sugar without insulin (diabetic, on insulin) in the am is anywhere from 135 to 190.
I don’t eat anything that’s noticeably carby, but still get these numbers.
Can anyone suggest what I can do to get to my goal weight and get off the insulin, blood pressure, statin, kidney meds totally.
What wrong with my method
would need a lot more info about you and what you eat to be able to help, list out a few days eating and your size and weight
Double check anything you are eating that has a nutrition label. Read both the nutrient panel and the list of ingredients. Sometimes there are sugars in the ingredients, but they have chosen the portion size so that they can say 0 g/serving.
Make sure you are eating enough. Don’t skimp on the calories. Remember that fat, because it stimulates insulin secretion the least, is your friend.
Double check your intake of artificial sweeteners. A lot of people find that one or more of them stimulate insulin secretion. This is completely individual, and a sweetener that works just fine for a friend or spouse might do you in, and vice versa.
Have you had your HbA1C taken lately? What was the reading? Any hope of persuading your doctor to switch you from insulin to Metformin? Would you be willing to stop taking the statin, regardless of what the doctor is telling you? What were your latest blood and lipid numbers?
You told us that you are down to about 206 lbs., but it would help to know your height, your age, your body fat percentage (if you know it), and so on.
Good luck, and keep ketoing on. We may not be able to come up with a solution for you, but we’ll sure try. (We are often quite trying, lol!)
I routinely check labels, but I guess I can look more closely.
I should have thought of this on my last post, but I’m 70 yo, but usually get taken for 60-ish.
I’m 5’10", at 206 (today at 204). Last known, BMI is about 28 or 29 if I recall.
My last A1C was 5.3, while taking the insulin prescribed (Humalog before dinner (15-20 units), Levemir before bed (20 units).
I have CKD Stage 3, so I can’t take Metformin, as it’s contraindicated for kidney patients.
I would stop taking the statin in a minute, just a little concerned about the consequences.
I’d have to look/find my last blood test to get the blood and lipid numbers.
The artificial sweetener may be something I have to look at.
I have as many as 3 cups of coffee in a day with H/H and 2 packets of splenda.
by the way, and this may not be unusual, my diabetes specialist/physician routinely asks me if I’m still doing that Keto thing.
He’s not opposed, but not exactly on board endorsing it.
It’s a diabetes clinic, with a nutritionist also, but she pushes the standard ADA line “did you get enough whole grain today, carbs today, fat, ugh”.
