What would you want in a ketone meter?

#1

Hey guys and gals

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about testing and tracking. What would your ideal blood ketone meter do?

I was thinking testing for glucose and ketones on one strip, with programming that showed BG, ketones, and GKI would be awesome. And strips that were reasonable in cost would be nice.

Thoughts?

@MEJG for starters the strips would be a lot less expensive. I doubt that would even be possible if one strip did it all, but I can dream!

I’ve never seen this kind of meter, but it’s a great idea, get your patent in right now! The only ones I know of are the same as you probably already investigated, the do BG and BKs, using different strips, and then I have a spreadsheet I plug those into that is set up to calculate GKI and graph it. Long way round I guess.

They are testing a meter like this now in Europe, but I’m not sure it’s ready for public consumption yet.

I have not tried this yet and I cannot remember which meter brand, but one of them makes veterinary ketone strips that are identical to the human ones and they are much cheaper. They charge more for strips marketed to humans presumably because of the liability.

So yes, less expensive would be essential, and I’d like it to also be able to connect with your smart phone to be able to track and graph results.
