What we're up against

(KM) #1

We went to the state fair yesterday. It’s always an interesting experience. I managed to get myself a smoked turkey leg and a big glass of unsweetened fresh tea, possibly the only things for sale that I could actually eat, even on $2 Tuesday ( every vendor has a small sized portion of something for $2, rides are $2 and so is admission!) The turkey leg was not $2, it was $18.

Anyway, we watched a demonstration of old farming equipment, they processed some wheat from harvest to its finished form with all chaff gone. The host came around and handed us small handfuls of wheat grains. The woman sitting next to me, probably in her 30s, looked at it dubiously and said, “do they even grow this anymore?”

I’m surprised that someone thinks we don’t grow wheat. Shocking, really.

I think this person simply doesn’t equate “food” and “stuff that comes out of the ground”. I told her these grains are ground up into flour, you know, the base for most of the bread, cookies and pasta she’s ever eaten. She seemed startled that this is what flour comes from.

She may also be startled to learn where eggs come from. :man_shrugging:

Do they even make those any more?

Pretty sad isn’t it. I grew up knowing where everything I put in my mouth came from. If my great aunt didn’t grow it, she bartered with someone who did.

Maybe she was expecting corn or soybeans? :man_shrugging:
