What is ideal level of ketones using ketostix

(Julie) #1

I am 15 days into this and trying to get used to the dos and donts. I use ketostix at home for normal diabetes stuff and my whole life have been afraid of having ketones. Now i am looking for them. What is ideal level to know im doing right?? I’ve been btwn small and moderate most days, some on deep moderate color. Am i even close here?

Don’t worry about it. The sticks are showing that you are producing ketones, and that’s all you need to worry about. If you are producing ketones, that means your insulin is low, and all is well. Just continue to keep your carbohydrate low, your protein moderate, and your fat high enough to satisfy your hunger, and you’ll be fine.

Keep calm, and keto on! :bacon:

Ideal would be any positive reading at all for me. The ketostix never registered anything in my case. The blood meter showed ketosis though, so I didn’t worry about it.

I’ve only had two. The first was a keto mojo brand tester. I liked it because it wasn’t that expensive and the strips came in 50 packs. I lost it on vacation, so I decided to try a precision xtra, which is pretty widely recommended around here. In addition to being more expensive itself, it’s strips only come in 30 packs and I believe average a bit more per strip than the keto mojo. It seems to read a bit lower ketone levels than the mojo did. Where I would get a 1.0 on the keto mojo, I get something like a 0.6 or 0.7 on the precision xtra. I like that because it makes me feel that I’m not getting a false high reading at least, though I have no concrete basis for knowing which is more accurate in reality.

In the end I think I would be comfortable with either meter, since all I really want to know is that I’m in nutritional ketosis and they both do that just fine. If price is an issue I would probably recommend the keto mojo.

I bought Kiss My Keto brand strips from Amazon Canada, 200 for $13.99. If you’re in the US they’re $8.99 at Amazon.com–that’s less than 5 cents each. They work for me.
