What is going on

(Mindy) #1

I started KETO in late Dec 2018 with a HA1C of 9.2
After one month I started intermittent fasting, 16/8 then to 18/4.
Last week my HA1C came back at 6.9, it’s heading in the right direction.
I decided to ramp up my fasting to OMAD. Since starting OMAD by blood glucose numbers during the fast are averaging in the 160s then after eating my one meal they drop down to the low 90s.
I don’t understand why or if this is even “normal” and wouldn’t this give me a skewed HA1C on my next test in June?

Blood glucose and insulin response can take time to normalize. It’s was a 5 month battle getting mine in a more normal range and my numbers weren’t as off as yours.

Mindy,

So many people define “going Keto” differently. Indeed, even we old-timers on this forum diverge on what is low-carb eating.

Give us a sample day, what you eat for the whole day is the primary concern. TO help us help you, tell us everything you ate yesterday, please.

So yesterday I went OMAD, I had for dinner chicken thigh & leg skin on with Avacado oil brushed on skin before cooking (10oz)
Romaine lettuce (2.5 oz) Cucumber (3.6 oz) cherry tomatoes (2.2 oz) celery (1oz) avacado oil (1 tbsp) opal greek lighthouse dressing-ranch (2 tbsp) Gouda cheese ( 1 oz)
My fitness pal gave my days eating 15 carbs, 28 grams fat, 13 grams protein
Percentage breakdown is 70% fat, 14% protein, 16% carbs
And yes, I do weigh and measure Everything…
My blood glucose upon waking this morning was 107, this afternoon at 1300 it was 166, the still fasting at 1700 it is 103…so why the 166 and what brought it down.

That is a tiny amount of food :open_mouth:

I wasn’t hungry anymore and it kept me satiated all through the day today

#7

What type of diabetes do you have & how long have you been diagnosed?

(Mindy) #8

Type 2 had gestational diabetes in 1991, then T2 about 17 years ago
On glimeride , Januvia, and they put me on Lantaus-but I haven’t injected that since beg of January. when I saw Dr in Dec he wanted to add a second insulin, but I said no.

I’m not familiar with those medications but have you told your doctor that you’re eating low carb? Seems to me that your pre-meal numbers are pretty high but the drop after your meal is to normal levels. Perhaps the OMAD/calorie restriction is stressing your body which is leading to the higher numbers? Keto to treat diabetes is really a long term thing so jumping in feet first isn’t always the best way to go.

(Mindy) #10

That’s the thing, there was no meal before the numbers dropped, that’s one of the things I don’t understand. I see Dr on Monday and I’ll tell him but I don’t expect him to be onboard

OK - I was basing my response on this

As to this…

blood glucose numbers will move about during the day - that is normal. As you are diabetic & on meds you will probably see larger variations. You may need a proper medication review.

I have no advice but want to congratulate you for taking action and I look forward to following your journey.

Hard to say, but if the fasting is causing a stress on your body that MAY explain the higher numbers, keep in mind our sugars can fluctuate during the day. Also make sure you’re eating enough calorie wise, I slowed down my metabolism from eating to satiety for too long, apparently my body is very happy with not enough. My weight loss stopped, I couldn’t gain strength etc. Took a long steady increase in calories which at time was like force feeding to get it back up, weight loss was easier again, strength came back but even now I’m still not where I was.

I’d really like to know what your goal settings are on my fitness pal that gives you a suggested daily calorie intake of less than 400 calories.

(Mindy) #15

My goal settings are 1160 cal/day broken down to macros
5% carb, 65% fat, 30% protein
That one day of 370 cal was not the norm for me, just wasn’t hungry that day.
Don’t want to eat when I’m not hungry, that’s what got me into this mess I’m in.
