What happened?!?

I’ve been Keto for about six months. Before that i had previously followed for a year. I’ve lost 185pounds with the help of wls and this woe.

I went to disney for a week, ate whatever i wanted walked over ten miles a day and came home ready to jump back in after my little break.

I measured and only went up about two inches in my middle but the scale says i’ve gained 12 pounds!!

HOW?!? WHAT?!?
I know a lot of it’s water weight, and maybe some muscle bc it was not light walking (gotta get to pandora first to avoid that four hour weight line for flight of passage :joy:) and maybe a bit of fat because i didn’t over indulge just enough to feel satisfied but i definitely wasn’t low carb… but how the actual fu@& did i gain that much weight!!!

As you said, mostly water weight. But, if you’re even slightly metabolically deranged, your body could go into fat production mode with any increase in carbs.

The first time I cycled off of keto woe, I put on 5 lbs overnight. That after having a few beers.

Once you get back into keto, you’ll likely see that weight drop fairly quickly.

We went to disney and my oldest daughter stayed keto and gained 6 lbs. She does not normally exercise and walked 8+ miles a day. A few days after coming home she lost 4, then 2, then 2 for net -2. Her muscles pumped up from walking with water and some liver manufactured glycogen.

Whoosh. gone. Hope most of your weight gain does the same.

Water weight. Don’t stress.

That must be disheartening but I hope too, that you’ll see the whoosh quickly.

By the way, fantastic job on your total weight loss. That’s amazing!

wow! Some dedication to stay keto at disney.
It was a planned carb cycle week for me, but i can’t imagine having all those smells wafting around and then having to go find a hard boiled egg :joy: good for her!

Yes! Like i said i gained two inches in the widest part of my stomach but everything else stayed the same so i’m happy that i learned about what a liar the scale was a long time ago. Nothing a few fasting days and hopping back on wagon won’t fix but i was still completely shocked at just how much of a jump the scale did in just seven days

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #7

Twelve pounds isn’t at all surprising. Ordinarily, I’d ascribe it to your scale’s being inaccurate, but the change in your waistline means it was a real gain.

There was a case report written up by a corporate physician in the 1960’s, as I recall, who had had great success getting the obese executives and workers at his company to lose weight on a low-carb/ketogenic diet. One executive, however, was so insulin-resistant (as we would interpret the data today), that a single apple could cause him to start regaining weight. In your shoes, I’d be very careful about going off-plan again.

When we first start keto, we can often lose a fast 10 pounds by depleting the glycogen stored in our liver and muscles. So it would make sense that your body saw all those incoming carbs as a great opportunity to refill your glycogen resevoirs.

Just remember that “water weight” is the easiest to lose.

absolutely.
I had stalled for about two months so i decided now was a good time to cycle in some carbs and kick start again once the week was over and mix in some i.f (because of the wls fasting is almost too easy and i found myself forgetting to eat most days anyway) so hopefully that weight will drop at a fair pace and then continue past where i was before i left.
Unfortunately i was only about 25 pounds away from goal, and now it’s a bit more :sob: but keeping calm and ketoing on of course!!
