What’d I do wrong?

So last night I did OMAD which consisted on a decent size ribeye cooked rare/med rare, some 5 mushrooms sautéed in butter and a pat of buttter over the steak. I also had one glass of red wine. I ate the entire steak including the good melt in your mouth fat. It was delicious and I felt completely satisfied afterwards. However, this morning I woke up super bloated, up several pounds on the scale (this wasn’t a huge deal but seriously my stomach was major bloat), and have been uncomfortable and not well feeling all day. This is not what I’m uses to on this diet, but yet this is how I THOUGHT I was kind of supposed to be eating? It was supposed to be a date night in, fancy dinner for hubs and I. What did I do wrong? Too much fat? My squishy belly that was once lean seems to think so.

Do you normally do OMAD or was this the first day and do you normally drink wine?

(Shannon) #3

Normally have red wine here and there yes. Occasionally do OMAD however I typically have a BPcoffee in late morning so not sure if it actually counts.

Well that’s interesting. Is it possible you’re premenstrual and it’s just coinciding?

Also, when you do OMAD are you managing to get enough salt on those days? I ask because I’ve read people can feel bloated when they aren’t getting enough.

I am at the tale end of my period

I added to my post while you were replying.

This is always a struggle but I liberally salt my food and then am constantly taking a few rocks of pink salt under my tongue throughout the day. I keep saying I’m going to measure in morning and put in a cup so I can make sure I am. What’s the recommendation?

Really this weekend did me in, i was doing so well and then with the weight gain from my period and then the bloating from this I’m up 7 pounds in a week. I know it’s not linear but it’s frustrating and I don’t feel well from it. Im cutting all alcohol and most veggies I think. I already don’t eat cheese or nuts. Also going to cut my 100% cacao.

I think this is a good idea. Bloating is usually caused by an intolerance to something we eat and I’d be surprised if it were from the fat and protein in your steak.

You can improve your gut microbiome by trying to include fermented foods in your diet; things like pickles, kimchee and sauerkraut. Apple cider vinegar is also suggested as something that can help improve digestion.

I’m also curious if you use a lot of coconut oil or MCT oil? Too much of either of these can cause bloating in some people.

Maybe your looking at it too close. Your trying to analyze one meal. Give it a few days and do it again. I can lose 3-5 pounds in a few days and gain it back again and I’m a guy. Sometimes I go to bed at 202 pound and wake up 200.5 having lost 1.5 lbs in my sleep and other night I only lose 1/2 lb. Dont try and analyze just one meal. And dont worry about the scale on a day to day bases other than for watching for trends.

Water? are you drinking enough to make you move your bowels?

(Shannon) #12

One TBS of MCT a day in my coffee. It doesn’t seem to cause an issue either way for me.

(Shannon) #13

At least 60 ish oz per day

(traci simpson) #14

I take MCT pills along with ground flax seed that I sprinkle in most of my food.

I’m wondering if it was this too. Like it was just a fluke or I maybe I just didn’t feel great bc of other circumstances. I’m also thinking alcohol is affecting me more and more as I get deeper into Ketosis, so that single (granted large) glass of wine along with a heavy dinner just was a lot. I don’t know. I shall keep experimenting.

This is a fact. Alcohol and ketones are produced in the liver and when we drink, the liver has to pull double duty. Not only does it have to make sure our ketone production is adequate, it has to process the alcohol as well.

When you consume alcohol, the liver might prioritize gluconeogenesis or ketone formation rather than ethanol metabolism – increasing the effect of alcohol. As well, a stomach full of carbs will slow down alcohol absorption, but many people eat much less on the keto diet. Be careful, you will become intoxicated at lower levels of alcohol consumption. Especially don’t drink and drive. (And note: even if you have not drunk very much, ketones in your breath may make you blow over in a breathalyzer, as some case reports have noted.)

When I occasionally drink alcohol, I immediately start to sweat and my blood sugar drop and it also effects my sleep also! It’s a pain in the butt so I don’t do much drinking at all and if I do, I’m at home and it’s early in the evening like before 6pm.

Yep I really think sadly this may have gotten me this time and what I was experiencing was a keto induced hangover! I just think the combination for me- big fatty meal, big glass of wine, and my kids woke up so we went to bed right after, was no good. Thanks for helping me figure it out guys!!
