Weird response to keto

(Angelia A Cameron) #1

I was in a meeting yesterday and they were passing out candy. When I said no, people look at me funny since I used to eat candy all the time. I just replied that I stopped eating sugar and then someone asked me if I was doing the Atkins diet and I said, no, keto. People gasped and one hollored, " are you crazy?". I was rather shocked by their shocked response. Anyone else have similar responses?

Oooh, you broke the first rule of Keto Klub! Unfortunately, that’s a common reaction. You would probably have gotten a better reaction if you’d simply said you were cutting back on the sugar, or something vague like that.

On the other hand, who knows what seed you may have planted. People have weird ideas about keto, because the news coverage about it is usually wrong, and keto is one of those crazy things that Hollywood celebrities are always doing. Seeing someone they know improve health and well-being may be what they need to see keto in a new light.

I don’t drink, and if I mention that I don’t, the worst reactions come from people who have secret doubts about their own drinking. You may find that the worst condemnation of your way of eating comes from the people who are struggling the most with sugar/carb addiction. Don’t take it personally; it says a great deal about them, and nothing about you.

And THAT’S why I say I’m doing Atkins instead of mentioning the K word (*Even though the same metabolic process is happening to the body.)

Did you tell them Atkins is a ketogenic diet? Did heads explode? :grinning:

Oh go ahead and tell them you alternate shots of bacon grease and butter for your evening meal.

I have the same reaction “oh that’s dangerous”. They assume it’s kedoacidosis and a path to heart disease. They freak when I tell them my cholesterol numbers are better than theirs.

As a former addict of processed foods, I can safely say that this response is perfectly natural. The mere mention of keto threatens their way of life, everything they were brainwashed to believe and most of the things they believe they love.

I just tell people that I eat whole, unprocessed foods, I don’t eat sugar and it makes me feel 20 years younger.

I’ve just been saying I’m trying to cut down on carbs a little…

I would have responded by saying this sugar is what’s killing all of you (usually people just laugh or just give me a blank stare when I say this).

The food industry has a good death grip around the the necks of most consumers (your not people) to the point of the cognitive dissonance described in George Orwell’s dystopian classic…

Seriously the reason people react like that is because some people get sick (the online grapevine kicks in) while doing keto because of the “no protocol (no rules)” gap before even attempting a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting or extended fasting…

Typical response is “…oh yeah I tried that diet and I got sick and this is why etc…” (they did NOT know what the heck they were doing to begin with nor do most of the licensed medical or dietetic personnel advocating this way of eating for that matter?)

You go into this with a messed up metabolism (and other medical conditions) from all the bad stuff your eating you will come out even worse off than you were before? Must take care of the things that are contrary to eating this way first before you nose dive into this?

When your body starts losing its capacity to oxidize sugar/glucose and high octane carbohydrates as you age that is when the problems ensue… The longer and higher the intake of eating that way persists the more your capacity to process these types of foods diminishes unless you have a lot of active brown adipose tissue hanging on your bones…

I don’t eat sugars or starches because they make me feel crap. That’s all anyone needs to know.

I was traveling in a group with some people, and there was this particular girl who would get very hungry at every 2 hours. She was skinny but she also dose a lot of exercise. She had ready for her and also all of us ready made portions for carb heavy snacks that she gave us if we get hungry. I and my GF were the odd ones because we did not eat carbs every 2 fucking hours… And she was shocked that we do not get hungry as her… She even stated that we are eating to little cabs for a healthy diet… and that she is very careful with her health because she fears diabetes… We also stopped every 2 hours at a gas station for people to constantly
shit
…

Eating three healthy small meals every three hours is a method of helping reset the metabolism and is a TEMPORARY method (insulin induced thermogenesis); but she will find out eventually with time that what she is doing “is not sustainable” as the heavy carb eaters like to throw in our face when they hear the word “keto?”

Marius, I blurred that for you. We do get some young people on these forums, so we encourage a bit of decorum, lol!

(Marius the butter craving dude) #13

So there is some kind of logic behind her eating… ? I will do some reading. But by keto standards they were not healthy, she eat high sugar and fiber snacks.
She is one of those people who are still skinny despite carbing up constantly, but she also dose a lot of exercise, people like her would be fat without the discipline of exercise.
Another type of person is a friend from high school. During highschool he had dangerous low bmi despite eating a lot of all and not doing sports. And a year ago he suddenly started getting chubby at 25. Quite the delay, unlike me who started getting fat at 14

(Bunny) #14

Started losing his active brown fat (BAT) capacity; what directly oxidizes sugar (as energy) as soon as you eat it, rather than insulin storing it as fat?

Why he started getting “chubby?”

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #15

That’s about when it began for me, too. Before that, I could eat anything and everything and not gain weight. If only I had known then what I know now . . .

(Amanda) #16

This in a nut shell. Who can argue with not eating highly processed food? Unless they feel bad about what they are eating. I also have a severe food allergy, so if pressed i usually follow it up with it doesn’t agree with me.

(Bunny) #17

Mick Jagger the classic ectomorph with higher BAT capacity. Notice the “…loads of avocados…” he is a big avacado fan!

“…These days, he eats mainly pasta, chicken, wholegrain bread, potatoes, rice, beans and fish - organic whenever possible. And loads of avocados. He claims that they have regenerative qualities. He says that he eats large portions and puts his slim physique down to his exercise and careful diet. …” - Mick Jagger

I’ve gotten a similar reaction and my own PCP tried to tell me it’s not sustainable. I calmly told her that I was probably eating a more balanced diet now with unprocessed foods, meats, eggs, vegetables and healthy fats. I asked her what the alternative was, to go back to eating sugar and starch? She really didn’t have a response for me.

(Jessica) #19

My brother reacted this way at a recent family dinner where my mom and I were talking about good options on the menu. He said “you know that diet is really bad for you, right?” Yeah, thanks, media. I quickly told him there was plenty of research to back it and I didn’t go into it blindly.

(Janelle) #20

My brother, who I love, but who knows it all, would probably tell me the same thing. He lost weight through calorie restriction and exercise. But guess what, he’s packing it back on again.
