Doc says lose weight and I can get off or reduce my blood pressure medications which are called beta blockers. I am also on one antidepressant a day. Both of these medications are notorious for weight gain and that is what I have been experiencing even on a ketogenic diet for the last 3 weeks. I am keeping my carbs at 20 grams or less a day and I am keeping my calories at 12 hundred and have all my macros correct for a ketogenic lifestyle. But I still cannot lose weight. Do you think it is the medications and should I just continue pushing through on the keto diet even lowering my carb intake until I lose weight? I just found out that I’m also pre-diabetic so I really need to find a way to lose weight and do it pronto. Just don’t know if this is the right path for me or not. Does anybody have any experience with not losing weight because of blood pressure medicine and what did you do about it?
Weight gain
What do those 1200 calories consist of.
Most people don’t count calories. They count carb and protein grams, carbs to stay under 20g a day and protein to stay close to your LBM maintenance target.
and 1200 calories may be too low for your body…i pretty much ignore what my tracking app shows for calories
too low of an intake and your body holds onto everything “just in case” even if you are doing everything else correctly.
20g carb or less net
1-1.5g protein per kg of Lean Body Mass
“the rest” is fat
at 125lbs/25ish% body fat (i haven’t weighed or tested lately), this is what my numbers look like:
1700 calories <-- only slightly lower than my recommended TDEE. only listing to show that less isn’t better
carb 20g or less (yesterday was 10g)
protein 85g
fat 142g
i am a little higher on protein than the recommended because that is what works for me but it took me a long while to figure that out and that i was eating too little overall…
In addition to what @Pilotbob asked, how tall are you? What are your energy levels like? How long are have you been at it? What kind of oils are you using (if they are poly or monounsaturated oils, they could very well be oxidized and cause inflamation, hence water weight gain)? Also, how much water are you drinking? Are you getting enough electrolytes? I have noticed that if I am not drinking enough water or electrolytes, my body will do its best to retain water.
If you’re eating too much protein, you could be seeing elevated blood glucose and will definitely see elevated insulin. 1200 calories also seems quite low unless you’re very petite. If you’re not eating too much protein, maybe think about upping the fat intake?
Also, storing fat is a function of hormones, not just insulin. You should check your insulin to see if it’s high, but you should also see if you have unusually high cortisol or unusually low estrogen. If I were you, I would also work with your psychiatrist to see about finding an anti-depressant that doesn’t cause you to gain weight. I am on wellbutrin and lexapro and haven’t had problems, but my psychiatrist told me that some people do. It all depends on how your body reacts to different antidepressants.
