Water Retention help 😩
How much salt are you getting? Both too little and too much can apparently cause bloat. Aim for 10-15 g/day of table salt (sodium chloride). Also, are you supplementing with potassium, or magnesium, or calcium? That could have an effect, as well.
The other thing that might be affecting you is that carbohydrates might, unbeknownst to you, have crept into your food. Doublecheck the labels of all food you are eating—both the nutrition label, and the list of ingredients—to verify that they haven’t changed the formula on you. Hidden carbs can be the very devil to trace.
I had severe fluid retention when on carbs (maybe you are ingesting hidden ones?); even vegetables (not carby ones, either, I’m talking about cabbage, green peppers) will cause retention to a lesser degree in my case.
Oddly I don’t retain from high sodium.
To diurese one must up fluid intake; when I am retaining I drink like mad and it soon begins to flush.
I detest plain water and add TrueLemon (not the flavor ones which have artificial sweetener) to every glass, adding lemon makes it so much better!
I suggest upping your water intake and see what happens.
Thank you; this is the first time I have seen how much salt we should have as a guideline. I had a leg cramp the other day, which I thought was weird; I thought I had been getting enough salt but evidently I can up it.
The recommendation comes from several fairly recent studies, and is the range of intake within which people seemed to be healthiest.
Of course, those of us not eating carbohydrate could probably do with even a bit more, but I haven’t seen or heard anything about how much more.
I have had some weird water retention issues for two weeks. At first I thought last weeks water retention was due to traveling, I did notice fatigue in my legs while I was gone, but thought it was the quick 3 day turn around of driving 7 hours each way in that heat we had. I noticed my ankles were swollen a day or two after I got back did the typical solution of drinking tons more water with a bit of salt seemed to solve it. Then last night I noticed my ankles swelling and this morning they swollen. I do have a standing desk which I stand about 6 out of 8 hours but am choosing to sit more today and again increased the amount of water. This has never happened to me were I have had water retention where I didn’t know the cause. I haven’t changed anything in the two weeks food wise. Thoughts?
If the swelling is localised to your legs, you might want to consult a physician who specialises in vascular problems.
My father’s family has an inherited problem with veins in the legs and other issues with peripheral circulation. With some of these conditions, a ketogenic diet can help only so much, I find.
