Water Rentention

newbies

This is my third week trying to maintain a keto diet. I was feeling fine until a couple of days ago. I drink what I thought was a lot of water, but now I feel like I am retaining a lot of water. I don’t know why?

Are you a menstruating woman?

After finally sticking to ketogenic eating for several weeks, the patterns in water retention have become VERY obvious to me (judging by puffiness of face and the number on the scale). I retain water 2 times during my cycle, right before ovulation and right when menses begins.

Like clockwork!

No, I should of said that. Sorry.

Are you getting enough salt and other electrolytes?

I am not sure. I cannot track my calories/carbs etc because my phone won’t let me use the apps for some reason. I don’t know if I should stop this diet, or keep going. I am not really hungry today and
my face and hands are very puffy.

I’m in the same boat…3 weeks in and retaining a good amount of water. I added in some salt water a few days ago because I was so tired…someone suggested it…I felt better almost immediately, but after doing this for a couple days I woke up super puffy this am.

This. Most people don’t get nearly enough salt in their diet if they’re not eating processed foods.

I’ve also had mild problems with water retention, but for me it usually only happens after eating too many carbs.

I have been researching it, and it says Epsom salt pulls excess water from your body, so I am going to try that. I also don’t think I am getting enough electrolytes after reading what Karen said. I am just not very hungry. I hope that’s the problem. I really don’t want to go back to eating like I did before. Thank you for telling me about the salt. I will try that too. I hope you feel better. Do you track your food intake?

I was, then I stopped because I felt it was making me crazy, THEN my hunger finally regulated and now I’m not eating nearly as much so I started again…just to make sure my carbs are low enough. I was eating so much the first couple weeks that I think I was going over on my carbs a bit. Anyways, short answer, yes. Just until things get settled. I’m definitely not in ketosis yet, but get small glimpses of what it might be like once I get “there”.
