Water: lukewarm, cold or hot?

(Susan) #1

I have read on various sites that it is bad to drink cold water, that is makes you gain weight, (or doesn’t help you lose it at any rate). They encouraged drinking water at lukewarm or even boiled, so I drink all my gallon or more of water I drink in a day (I have a glass that holds 32 ounces and I drink 5 or more filled with water a day, and I have always drank tap water, could never afford bottled and never minded anyway).

I was curious also if one calculates water that is boiled in a cup (with only some fresh lemon juice added) in this equation as well. I am assuming that any coffee/tea/herbal tea is not, even if nothing is added, as it is not just water.

Thanks for any/all replies =)

I’m not a believer in water temperature theories. If it’s a hot day and you find a cold drink with ice refreshing I don’t see a problem with that, probably even good for you. I don’t believe water temp has anything to do with weight loss. If you drink something really cold fast it can shock an empty stomach, many people I have known had water temperature preferences, and some people even that you shouldn’t have any water with food. I would say do what you want and don’t worry about it. :cowboy_hat_face:

I know nothing of the science, what I know is I can drink a gallon of room temperature water and it does nothing for my thirst, but a lovely glass of ice water quenches it every time. That’s good enough for me!

Thank you, David and Daisy =). I am just always trying to tabulate all the different information I hear! Great to get input =)).

My personal preference is room temp water, because I can drink much faster BUT it has to be distilled or bottled water. When I drink water from fridge filter it is slightly cold which is what I like for tap/filtered tap water…it can start to taste a bit off to me as it warms up. I think adequate hydration is probably much more important than water temp. Had a friend in elementary school whose grandpa was over 100yrs old, he would tell everyone the key to a long life was drinking a plain warm to hot cup of water every morning

I am glad I don’t spend my time looking at those sites, I guess. I drink ice water. Tap water with ice in it.

I agree that it doesn’t matter. I like mine cold but also have had to drink room temp water. Neither affects me accept I enjoy it really cold better. I am a bit of a snob though and really don’t care for city water. Reverse osmosis is my choice or really good water from a great well. The smell of treated water is a real turn off for me.

Thanks to all that have replied and I appreciate everyone’s input and comments! Our water here has no smell and I am 54 and have lived here most of my life and always drank it, so I am used to that. I think it can depend where you live. Years ago I lived in the Chicago area for a while and the water from the tap was not safe to drink, so when I lived there I bought bottled water. We even had to pre-boil the water to use it for washing dishes. I am sure that it has probably improved since then, as this was over 30 years ago.

I can’t stand warm water. I go so far as to freeze half bottles of water and top them off with water, then drink them while the ice slowly melts. That way water is always ice cold. I am dropping weight beautifully on keto just the same.

(Susan) #10

Great, thanks =). I am glad to know from all the replies that I will still lose the weight with cold water too, and don’t have to make sure it is lukewarm.

Thanks for all the replies and assurances, you are an awesome bunch of people here, I am so happy I discovered you all.

I just don’t like cold water so always warm it.

(Susan) #12

Do you drink it in a coffee mug, like hot? I have been drinking it in my large cup that holds 32 ounces, from the tap with the tap set between hot/cold. I can easily consume a full 32 ounces in under a minute at that temperature. I will probably continue to do that to make sure I get enough water into me.

I will also now not be afraid of having a cold glass with ice in it if I am going to go into the backyard with my grand daughter now though, I was kind of scared of having any water with ice in it before I asked here.

Thanks for replying =)). All the different responses and knowing it doesn’t seem to matter for the weight loss is great.

Can’t fathom why or how cold water would affect loss, at all.
When swallowed, it warms as it travels down the esophagus and instantly when it hits the stomach.
If it stayed cold once consumed there may be some vasoconstricting effect that may in turn slow digestion but this is unsound theory and is negated by the fact that the liquid consumed doesn’t stay cold enough long enough to affect anything.

I wonder who came up with this odd theory in the first place?

I just remembered reading on some site that cold water was bad for you, but reading what everyone has been saying and how it doesn’t affect your weight loss, I think that the info I gathered previously was wrong!

Your description of how it changes in our systems is great, thanks for the info, Blue Violet, very interesting and certainly makes sense!

After all the replies I won’t be concerned with drinking cold water anymore, that is for sure =-).

(Marianne) #15

I drink warm water, only because I prefer it to cold.

(Allie) #16

Same as me.
It needs to be at least room temperature, really don’t like cold water.
