Water fasting /heart rate

Should I supplement electrolytes with pink Himalayan salt or potassium citrate powder or both?

First of all, ask yourself if you need to go to the hospital. If your heart is really distressed, you might be in danger.

Second, my guess is you are low on Potassium, drink up your Lite Salt.

Sodium helps regulate your electrolytes so regular doses during fasting is not a bad idea. Potassium and magnesium both play roles in heart function so regularly eating foods rich in these minerals should help make fasting uneventful. I’m not a big fan of supplements because overdoing it can cause complications of their own. It’s very improbable to OD on electrolytes if we are getting them from food and our bodies are very resourceful in storing them in cells for use when we are not eating them.

So if you do supplement, be mindful of the recommended dosage and if a faster heart rate persists for more than a day or two, I would see a doctor like @andesite suggests.

My heart rate always speeds up when I’m water fasting, doesn’t worry me. Fasting is a stressor to the body, it goes back to normal after. If you’re concerned though, get yourself checked out.

A good way to check on whether you may have an electrolyte imbalance is by checking your blood pressure daily and comparing the times you show any symptoms to your normal value. The last thing you’d want to do is add potassium if you already have lowered bp.

Supplementation might be more important the longer you fast. How long are your fasts?

My heart rate drops about 20bpm within 24hrs of fasting. It’s normally in the 80s (I’m super-obese) but it’s in the 60s when I’m fasting. Soon as I start eating again it goes back up.

Strangely on my last fast (37 hours) by resting heart rate dropped down to 45 bpm from it’s normal 60 - 65bpm and I haven’t done anything differently.
