Walnuts and diff carbs

Why are California walnuts so different?
Some have a net carb zero while others have 2.

I just found the Costco ones of a zero net carb, vs some other store I bought having 2nc

Then the Costco ones

Are they just rounding perhaps. I have a hard time thinking net carbs are free for these walnuts.

If I’m seeing correctly the costco ones show a serving as 1/4 cup as opposed to the others as 1/2, meaning the Costco ones are actually double the carbs. But forgetting that for a moment, different serving size can affect the way each is rounded up or down. Like If both were the same exact contents and had 3.4 g carbs and 2.56 g fiber per 1/4 cup then:
1/4 cup serving could show as 3 total and 3 fiber = 0 net
while
1/2 cup would be 6.8 total (rounding up to 7) and 5.12 fiber (rounding to 5) = 2 net (or 1 net per 1/4 cup)

Is that a Canadian label? Only a idea for you, but does Canada follow US or UK nutrition labeling?
On U.S. labels and carb counts it is total carbs and then subtract fibre to get net carbs. On UK labels fibre is already subtracted.

It’s done the same way, just indented here in Canada to show total carbs. Then you still minus what you want like fiber to make net carbs.

I have confirmed that at a health and keto store. They minus out the fiber the same way.

That’s interesting @annecbrodie but the fact is the food industry never rounds up. I know what we were taught in school but it seems that the food industry labeling laws state that <1g of anything is an insignificant amount nutrionally by law. So they always can round down, and I mean 1.9g. Will always be listed as 1g. This is why I always recommend the use of an app like Cronometer. They have access to a national nurtuonal database and can calculate carbs by the weight you enter. And add that to often deceptive food serving sizes for more manipulation. Sometimes tweaking the serving size means 1 less carb in addition removed. Like sausages with a 2oz serving size listed…Who eats that much, a three year old?

:cowboy_hat_face:

As far as walnuts they have carbs, 2g. for 30 gram serving. The amounts listed and the weight stated don’t match, never use cups, use grams. Man @MiroBeero you seem to find the crazy labeled stuff! :cowboy_hat_face:

I look at all the labels now. 41 years I looked at nothing. Now I hit a section and spend some time going thru it all and comparing.

We have bulk Barn here too in Canada and some of those walnuts depending on preparation is like 10net carbs. So I go thru it all.

One day it’s pickles, the other is nuts. All depends what section I hit at a grocery store and spend some time on. Then I pick out the best and get family to check what they have.

So just trying to get some normal day to day ingredients into the cabinet for easy cooking
