Walking with vegans

(Duncan Kerridge) #1

Did a 26 mile hike with three friends yesterday, 2 of them are vegan and the other just eats a regular diet. The night before there was a lot of whatsapp chat going on about what was best to carb load with for the next day. I just kept quiet.

We’re all pretty fit the walk itself wasn’t too taxing, apart from the blisters we all picked up in the last five miles  The real difference that I had kind of forgotten about after nearly 2 years keto was the ‘fueling’. All three of them were eating all the time!

Every couple of miles they would be digging in their packs for the next snack to keep them going. The timing of a lunch break became a hot topic. After lunch they kept on eating and snacking. I’d considered walking it fasted but took some food along in the end but I didn’t eat it all. After a while you forget how much keto frees you from this constant hunger and topping up of energy, yesterday was a good demonstration for me.

On the flip side I probably confirmed their worse suspicions about keto as all my food was animal based - 3 boiled eggs, some strips of bacon and some cheese. :grinning:

A few day with my raw vegan cousin was similar. She spent her whole day on food shopping, prep and constantly chewing. We took a twenty minute ride and had to bring food along.

Karen, I have noticed most of my friends, vegan or not do the same thing, shopping for food, prepping it, and eating constantly. I remember those days all to well. Hungry all the time on lfhc WOE.

So I glad I am just a #ketozombie these days. Life is so much more enjoyable. I even like it when I go shopping now, since I don’t have to do it all the freakin’ time, I can enjoy it again.

I recently did two 9 mile rough trail hikes (in to campsite and back out two days later) unfueled, wearing 48 pounds of pack. No issues, no hunger. Ate evening meal, likely under 1500 cal/day. Felt great, fantastic solo backcountry trip.
