Vomiting on keto

(Vdawg Snowden) #1

Hello everyone. I started keto in August 2018 for about a week. After a week, I would try to eat a veggie or an egg and it would not sit in my stomach. I would puke it right back up. I stopped keto and then tried again in September. September 16th My best friend passed away so the diet wasn’t a concern anymore. I started to do it again on the 23rd of this month because I’m tired of being overweight out of breath and depressed. Today I ate broccoli with a piece of cheese and a salad with grilled chicken and a big glass of water. I could not keep the broccoli down. I threw it up. I just want to know why my body is rejecting this. I don’t think it’s the keto flu because I don’t feel terrible, I just feel like my blood sugar is a little low. Can someone please help me so I can continue the keto diet and lose this weight ? Also, I’ve wrote everything in my notes that I’ve eaten since the 23rd. Maybe this will help image

Almost sounds like pancreatitis, have you checked with your doctor about this? (you do not want to do LCHF if that is really the case?)

I’m not sure about this but it sounds like your having a hard time digesting any kind of fat? (I do mean any in the slightest!)

Other possibilities:

Feeling Sick on a Ketogenic Diet?

There are 3 reasons why they feel sick on a ketogenic diet. This could be called the keto flu.

  1. Too much fat too quickly - if your gallbladder is not present or you do not have enough bile, and you add too many fats, this will overload the liver and gallbladder and create the feeling of nausea, feeling of the flu, bloating, right shoulder pain - esp. around the upper right trap, scapula or rhomboid muscle. For this I would recommend a simple solution, cut down the fats a bit - add Gallbladder Formula: https://shop.drberg.com/gallbladder-f
  1. The ketogenic diet does deplete both electrolytes and B-vitamins. This alone can create fatigue, tiredness and by simply adding back in B-vitamins from nutritional yeast or some other natural source and electrolytes (esp. potassium), you can quickly resolve this. Your running the body now on a different cellular machine, which require slightly different nutrients. https://shop.drberg.com/electrolyte-p
  1. The 3rd reason is that you are stuck in “transition phase”. **If you have been running your body on sugar your whole life and you are switching to fat burning, you have to adapt. This requires new enzymes, etc. There is 2 ways you can do this - you can go cold turkey and just do it hard core OR you can do in more gradually. This would be mean avoiding sugar, grains, refined foods BUT keep in fruit, quinoa, yams or sweet potato - do this for a while, then over time you can take away the fruit.

Thank you  I will talk to my doctor. Pancreatitis sounds scary

Not trying to scare you, we just want to be sure what’s causing the regurgitation of foods, because pancreatitis and LCHF can be a life-threatening combo if that really is the case, so better to be safe? :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

You’re eating VERY little daily. Two pieces of bacon and one egg for the entire day?

For me, if I am really, REALLY hungry and I eat a meal I feel nauseous and like I could vomit.

Try separating out foods for a couple of days to find out what you’re reacting to. For instance try eating some vegetables when eating nothing else, just salt and pepper, maybe a touch of lemon juice. If you can hold that down try eating just meats for a day. Experiment this way and you might find a certain combination is not working. Certain foods digest easier than others, sometimes leaving a food item to ferment in the stomach undigested when eaten with something easily digested. I have felt ill before for a long while only to vomit up some remnant of something I ate the day before and felt better almost instantly afterwards. Just some ideas to consider, I think checking with your doctor is prudent as others advised. I went through a 30 day period when I started dialysis years ago when I could not eat anything solid without instantly vomiting. I lived on Ensure during this period and eventually reintroduced solids. Cannabis was also a strong medicine for nausea in my case. I used a wax extract for instant relief. I would often take one or two bites and felt the urge to purge. After one puff and 5 minutes I would continue eating and my food was still warm. I felt fine finishing eating. It was a godsend for me. I lost almost 20 lbs that month from calorie deficit.

My husband vomited a LOT from keto flu before we sorted out how much salt he needed.

Put a full teaspoon of salt in a little container and make sure you eat it ALL during the day. Start your day with at least a 1/4 teaspoon and a big glass of water. Use ADDITIONAL salt on your food. You may even need more than this. Lots of people here have 2+ teaspoons of salt a day. Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day.
