Vitamin C and blood sugar

(Karin Geertsma) #1

I’ve been checking my blood sugar levels an hour after taking 3,000mg of vitamin C, and my blood sugar is showing around 90 each time. I don’t think that’s a number to be super concerned about, but that’s definitely higher than normal for my post meal checks. I’ve googled the topic but am having trouble finding anything substantial. Any thoughts on this?

Look at the vitamin C , it does have some sugar in it… I think 5 grams or so. Maybe that is why?

most of the one I seen have sugars in them

The one I bought says no sugar, but maybe I’m reacting to one of the other inactive ingredients. Who knows  Thanks for your input.

I swear I just read a post somewhere Vitamin C causes false readings on blood sugar tests. Chemically they’re very similar? Our something?

I get my vitamin c from sauerkraut, luckily I like it,also has lots of beneficial bacteria for the gut , better than a probiotic pill, you can make your own or trader Joe’s has a very good sauerkraut in the refrigerated section

I take about 5000mg of Vitamin C between last thing at night and first thing in the morning as Sodium Ascorbate. This is a bufferred form of Ascorbic Acid which serves as a source of sodium for me. I don’t measure blood sugar levels but I find that vitamin C more often than not increases my ketosis levels, measured by breath acetone using a meter, especially if my ketosis levels are low.
