We will be visiting Rome for the first time this summer. We don’t plan on worrying about being strictly keto, but we have intolerances to dairy (me) and gluten ( the whole gang.) Is it possible to find food without gluten and/or dairy in Rome?
Visiting Rome This Summer
Rome is a tough one, at least from what I remember from my visit last year before going Keto. Pizza and pasta galore (thee best I’ve ever had I must add), and I don’t remember ever seeing any specialty items/menus for folks with food intolerances at any of the hole in the wall restaurants I went to. You might have some luck at the fancier establishments geared toward tourists, but I’d do some research ahead of time and make a list of places to eat.
I’ve not been back to Rome since going low carb either but we generally prefer not to eat in restaurants when we travel. We would pick stuff up from delis/markets & picnic most of the time. Hotel breakfasts will usually have an egg option though & steak shouldn’t be too hard to get - I’d be surprised if Italy has remained untouched by the gluten furore too.
You can always try to sub broccoli for pasta, and opt for red sauces (for you).
I don’t eat gluten or dairy either and had NO trouble at all in Rome. Our hotel had an extensive breakfast buffet with meats, etc.
Italy has great fish and meats, and you don’t have to order pasta in restaurants. We found one local restaurant we loved that had an ‘antipasto’ buffet that was absolutely great and with a lot of fish, meat choices as well as veg.
I had no trouble at all–and I eat <10g carbs usually. And the food was great.
