Visiting New York

(carol mclintock) #1

So my rather wonderful partner has just told me that he has booked a trip to New York for next week - this will be the first time I have visited the States and I have always wanted to go to New York especially.

Been 5 1/2 months Keto, stalled for a month and my question is how easy is it to eat Keto when relying on restaurants and diners? I want to enjoy the experience but don’t want to sabotage myself (or end up with the galloping trots while out and about :flushed:)

TIA

It’s super easy if you stick with simple meals. Bacon & eggs are readily available pretty much anywhere that serves food. Bunless burgers are an option, steaks, seafood, etc. They’ll likely try to push sides that are high in carbs but you can always refuse or ask the wait staff about carb free options.

Where are you traveling from? I’d be more concerned about the meal options on a long flight, if that is the case.

It’s quite doable but does require planning. NYC has many excellent restaurants (I lived there for 10 years.) I wrote a suggestion to help make your dinning out easier when doing LCHF, applicable anywhere, not just NYC.

New York state? New York city? Rural? In a city?

If you’re talking NYC, I’m sure you can find enough restaurants. I usually stick to salads, burgers with no buns, breakfasts like eggs/bacon, and the like. Personally, I find eating out to be expensive. I will often spend $40-60 for my own meal and still be hungry. (An aside: usually the servings of fish are tiny, maybe 6 ounces or so, at least for me.) But it depends on the restaurant, how many meals (I usually eat 1-2) and the like.

There are delis (like Katz’s) where you can have a “meat feast”! Of course, New York has many wonderful restaurants and likely many people who practice keto so asking for a bun less hamburger or getting a yummy steak and salad won’t be a problem. If you are sightseeing on foot, you may see step counts like this.

we’re flying from England - had a look at the inflight options and I am leaning towards skipping the meal - thanks for taking the time to reply :slightly_smiling_face::slightly_smiling_face:

My pleasure. If I were a rich man, my wife and I would make NYC a regular visit. As @CatGirl says, NYC is wonderful for walking. So much to see, everywhere and everyone. Let us know if you find any good restaurants.
