Vintage lady success stories

(mags) #1

Hello. I’m a 61 year old lady from the UK. I’ve been seriously keto for about 6wks. I dabbled around for a few months until Christmas and…well you know how it goes!
I know I have lost a little weight because my clothes are a bit looser but I now have a scales…which was probably a mistake because they are going the wrong way. I’ve tried giving them a hearty kick too!
I was really successful with Atkins about 20 years ago and the weight just dropped off me. That isn’t happening this time. Is it my age? Is it my type2 diabetes? My bloods are much better, generally around 5.6 but I am only eating around 10gms carb a day.
My macros are good. I’m eating plenty of good fats and around 50-80 gms protein. Oh and I’m around 300lbs so have plenty to lose! I’m also only eating between 2 and 8 pm.
I love this way of eating and I’m not stopping what I would like to hear is some success stories from ladies like me to give me a rosy glow of positivity for things to come.
Sorry for the long post.

I’m trying out the cycling of feast and fast as discussed on podcast 58:

Maybe your body has gotten used to the amount of energy you will be giving it every day, despite the time window?

(mags) #3

Yes maybe. I have done a 2day fast and I’m working myself up to another one.
But I’m interested in success stories. Do.you have a motivational story to share??

Hi Mags and welcome
I consider myself a success story. I am within 10 lbs of my goal. At first in 2016 I was chasing the scales without understanding how my body works. Started keto in Dec 2016 Lost 25 lbs I started at 208. Hit a stall and didn’t know what to do. So I ventured into veganism for about 4 months. Still chasing the elusive scale… Gained 10 lbs. I didn’t tell you I’m a diabetic. In Dec 2017 went back to keto, found the 2 Dudes podcast and educated myself on the science of weight loss and weight gain. So now I really try hard not to measure myself by the scale. I have a size 12 pair of pants and I can get in them but I can’t zip yet. But that’s progress. I have reversed my TD2, come off all but 1 medication including psych med. And lowering my insulin resistance. So if it takes a little longer for these last 7-10 lbs that’s ok. I’ve learned on this 2 year journey to keep calm and keto on.

Didn’t tell you I am 58 years young

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I too am trying to educate myself. I’m binge listening to podcasts, YouTube and this forum. I think the best thing I can do at the moment is hide my scales. Hopping on them every morning is just causing me anxiety.
You obviously are very well informed. I’ve just had a call from my doctor about my creatine levels being ‘off’ and asking me to have another blood test. Have you come across this as a side effect of keto diet?

(Karen) #7

I have kidney issues. My creatinine is generally off.

I have not. I see my dr in May. My cholesterol numbers have increased so he may be unhappy. I, however am not worried. Science is always evolving and the old ideas of diet, heart disease etc are progressing thanks to scientists who are willing to do the work. These progressive scientists are engineers who said enough. So continue your education be convinced that keto is right for you. I did I convinced myself thru education. Never going back.

Thanks for sharing that. I see it says that you may be asked to abstain from cooked meat before test. I had a large plateful of belly pork couple of hours before test! Let’s hope that was the problem. I shall KCKO til my next result…and maybe chuck in a little fast before I get my bloods done.

I’m not going back either. And thanks for your advice

62 here. I started KETO in September when my A1C hit 6.5 and my Dr wanted to put me on Metformin. I’ve lost 25 pounds (read slow loser here) and my A1C just came back at 5.7. My BP is perfect and cholesterol is greatly improved. Yeeeaaay KETO!

(mags) #12

Brilliant. That’s 1lb a week so that’s fine isn’t it. I must learn to have more patience and to realise that I can’t shed weight like I used to 20 years ago. But at least I’ve stopped gaining which I usually am when I’m eating loads of carbage. KCKO

(Darlene Horsley) #13

You’ll find you lose inches when the scale isn’t moving. Lots of body recomposition and internal healing going on. So yes, be patient. We didn’t gain it overnight.

Check out Dave Feldman’s video Here’s his video

Best results come from eating keto for a few days before the draw and then within the 12 hr. window do the fasting.

Not in terms of pounds lost, but I do consider myself a success. And as an old broad (73), I am a slow loser too. I would kill to be able to lose as fast as one pound/week!.. But I accept who I am - couldn’t do anything about it anyway.

I’ve flirted with low carb for years and had already given up hard-core carbs I don’t remember when. But weight would always inch up anyway. At the start of 2017 or so, I started lazy keto - not counting anything and just eating. Gained 10 pounds. I knew that was not going to work, even though my blood sugars were in a good enough range. So at about Christmas of '17, I decided to follow keto seriously… I still wasn’t weighing, but did have some sort of ‘whoosh’ - I could tell by my clothes. I’d guess about 5 pounds.

January 10 I got back on the scale at 223.5. I also started writing every consumed morsel down, and did count carbs. Since then I’ve lose ‘only’ 5.5 pounds. But, hey, that’s better than nothing.

Over this time I’ve continued to hone my process by eliminating or reducing dairy, sweeteners, reducing protein intake, and really minding my hunger signals, eliminating most snacks, staying colder, and whatever other tweaks I learn about. I do not yet fast, but for me, that’s something I’ll have to work up to.

I feel really good on this diet, my mood is great, I adore the food, never feel deprived, don’t have cravings, have much less hunger, have more energy. I’d rather feel good at 200+ than be a skinny mean bitch. Though over time losing the weight is important to me, even if it will take a very long time. There is no alternative.

Thanks for your positivity. You are so right about this way of eating. I too love the food. My old favourites of bread and cakes no longer interest me. I’m just hoping the pounds will start to shift over time.

I’ve just gotta tell someone about this! I’ve lost 26 pounds in 12 weeks with keto, and I am thrilled!

I realize 26 is not a lot compared with some of the folks on this forum. However, I was just 40 pounds over my “ideal” weight (according to the various tables online) when I began. My primary motive for beginning this WOE was to heal nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, first diagnosed 5 or 6 years ago. Last fall I had a follow-up scan, and I was alarmed by the fact that my liver had not improved despite my attempts to overcome the condition with what I thought was a healthy lifestyle–exercise, very little alcohol, and a near-vegetarian diet based on beans, rice and other “good carbs.” Now I know better, and I believe the fact that I had cut out most eggs and red meat (important sources of choline) actually made my NAFLD worse.

As far as I’m concerned the weight loss is a bonus. At 68, I had convinced myself I was satisfied with being “pleasantly plump.” (I was in denial–of course 40 pounds overweight increased my health risks.) Now that I am losing that extra weight, I feel so much better! The best part is, it has been so easy with keto foods.

I’m thankful to have a space here to brag. I have three friends in RL who are doing keto with me and not losing as fast as they would like, and so I don’t feel right celebrating this little victory with them. I’m 5’9", began at (about) 185 pounds, now at 159. I haven’t been in the 150s in so long I can’t remember the last time! Woohoo. (Calm down and keto on, Jeannie.)

(mags) #18

You brag away Jeanne🤗. You’ve done fantastically well. Apart from losing weight do you feel better from eating keto and when will you next get scanned so that you will know the effect on your liver?
I love this way of eating and I am longing to see better results on the scale. Well done you you.

(Jeannie Oliver) #19

Thanks, Mags. Yes, indeed I do feel better from eating keto.

I’ve especially noticed that I feel mentally sharper. When I made the decision to go keto, I was visiting my daughter in Tennessee for the holidays. She is part of a keto Facebook group and had requested a keto cookbook for Christmas, and that was where I first learned about the keto WOE and effects of ketosis on brain function. I had been a bit concerned about possibly losing some of my mental acuity, as I had noticed that more and more often I couldn’t find specific words when speaking. For example, walking through the grocery store I was trying to tell her I wanted to get some romaine, and I couldn’t come up with the word “romaine.” That truly alarmed me. The good news is, that kind of thing just doesn’t happen to me now.

Of course, like everyone here, with keto I have more energy to do the things I want to do. I’ve noticed that I even walk at a more rapid pace when I’m shopping, at home doing housework, or outdoors working in my yard. Also, my joints no longer ache, and the texture of my skin is improved.

I see my doctor next week for the first time since I started keto. I plan to ask him then about my next opportunity to evaluate my liver.

I know exactly what you mean about mental acuity. I’m a trainer and will suddenly grind to a halt and hunt around in the ether for whatever point I was trying to make. A sea of confused faces in front of me! Humour is the best weapon there I think.
Some days I think my joints are much better and then they are painful again. I’m going to track my intake to see if there is a link.
One great thing I’ve noticed is all of my shoes are too big and I have very trim ankles. I might even consider showing an ankle with some new sandals in the summer :sunglasses:
