Very cool! lean mass loss is partly attributable to fat loss itself

#1

You guys!!! this is so cool:

Body Fat Loss Automatically Reduces Lean Mass

I’ve seen this in Voley and Phinney as well, and the gist is that our fat cells have lean components, so when see a drop in lean mass during weight loss, at least some of that can be attributed to the breakdown of the fat cells themselves. This means that the usual recomposition that we see when someone goes keto is actually more dramatic than it seems. Also means that if we see a small drop in lean mass during fasting, it might be at least in part because of the lean parts of fat cells that are bing used (hopefully it’s also old proteins from connective tissue, etc).

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

There should be a bit of muscle loss, as well, I understand, because it’s no longer needed for carrying all that weight around, lol!

I am in this camp. People can run around looking at things under microscopes when it comes to things like muscle gain / loss but I think diet is almost irrelevant.

A person that has the best diet in the world for muscle gains will not gain any muscle without doing something to force the adaptation of expensive muscle tissue.

A person eating McDonalds will add muscle easily with a “lift heavy things” workout regime.

I think we evolved this way - regardless of our current dietary state (nearly fasted in winter, fattening on summer fruits, full of meat after a big kill etc.) we still had to adapt to what was necessary to survive (10 miles a day of walking, sprinting away from tigers, gathering wood for the nightly fire, going on the hunt etc.) or we would not have survived.
