Hello, I have been on keto for a week and I have all the signs of being in ketosis, my appetite is way down(which is a good thing) but i am having a problem getting any vegetables in. Is this OK for now?
Vegtables
Yes, that’s fine. You don’t HAVE to eat vegetables at all if you don’t want to. Compared to meat / fish / eggs, there isn’t a whole lot in veg that people need.
I converted from ketogenic (2019) to carnivore in November, 2025. I haven’t had a fruit or a vegetable since, and I feel great!!
Welcome to the forum!
I agree that you can do quite well without any veggies. They provide me with some variety and make this way of eating sustainable but many don’t need that and probably do better in terms of weight and appetite control etc.
Give it a bit of time with fewer vegetables for now. Your appetite will change over the next few months. Most folks naturally migrate to just one or two meals per day. I have been carnivore for seven years, but for the 18 months of keto before that, I ended up eating a good amount of vegetables for variety once I was fat adapted and down to two meals per day without snacks, and still keeping my net carbs at 20 grams or less. Patience is key and you will see more amazing health benefits the longer you stick with a keto way of eating.
Lucky, I missed vegs like crazy on my original keto sometimes (I loved vegs and in bigger amounts at that)… It got way easier when I wanted to try carnivore and somehow lost interest in most vegs. SOOO much easier without all those carbs - and while some people find they are better with some vegs, some of us are quite fine without any, it’s not like they give us anything we couldn’t get from animal food! (Well us who doesn’t need fiber to function well. Just because it’s not essential for humans in general, some people need it. But you don’t need vegs to eat lots of fiber, there are other, way lower net carb sources.)
It’s just me but interestingly, even before I added back meat, taking out vegs solved some of my problems (it was a super short period), it turned out the carbs in them managed to interfere with various things and even made my diet more boring somehow despite the bigger variety. Plant carbs and me, not the best combo. But it’s quite individual and I still eat some vegs here and there for various reasons, that’s fine. Like a pickle or a few slices of radish, maybe onion in stew (very, very little as it’s enough)… I eat enough animal food (and little enough vegs, usually) that vegs have no nutritional value to me, it’s just joy and convenience.
Try to find your sweet spot, maybe experiment a little (I did it a lot as it was fun and interesting to me, I needed it too as my original style wasn’t good enough and I keep changing anyway). If you feel right with zero vegs and get everything you need that way, it’s fine. If you eat little but some and it’s still good, cool. And if you eat moderately much and still gets ketosis and feel great, that’s not a bad thing either… So do whatever works for you. Since I base my diet on animal products and lost interest, I think little about vegs as they won’t bring a lot of carbs, it’s very convenient. Tracking every day and trying to avoid going too high (tricky for the ex veggie lover me) was a chore. So it may be very lucky you don’t want much vegs! As long as it works for you.
I need a big variety but vegs aren’t needed for that. There are so many other options… I focus on animal food but a quite wide range of them. As long as I have meats, eggs and dairy, I don’t strictly need more than minimal plant stuff (and my body says it doesn’t need any at all but I am not just my physical self).
Unlike protein and fat, there isn’t a single plant food that essential for us, so you’re doing just fine without any. Like others here, I’ve not eaten any plant for over 5 years and I’m thriving.
I prefer doing keto with some soluble fiber with every meal. For breakfast that includes a handful of organic berries. For dinner that includes asparagus, cruciferous vegetables - usually broccoli, brussel sprouts or cabbage - or a kale/cabbage salad. Do you have to include vegetables? No, but I prefer to. They are usually seasoned with grass-fed butter and Herbamare salt. I don’t have a problem staying in ketosis this way, and often even include a whole fruit for dessert, but if you are trying to lose fat, I would drop th fruit.
