Hi I’m 4 weeks into Keto and enjoying some of the foods but being vegetarian it’s quite hard to be creative with ideas to eat I would love some ideas from anyone other then eggs I’m over them
Vegetarian Keto having trouble being creative and energy levels
Might I interest you in some non-sentient, no face having, oysters or other bivalves?
While Minger wrote this for vegans, I think a lot of the tips apply to vegetarian ketoers.
I would add that soy protein is not that great, compared to animal proteins, and other vegetable proteins are also kind of not really the same…

Tofu is low carb- you can get it marinaded or marinate it yourself. I love cheese- so many different sorts, keeps it interesting! Do you eat quorn (not sure where you are, I’m UK)- I’ve made quorn fillets coated in ground almonds & parmesan. Goats cheese & spinach quiche, with pastry made from almond flour, cheese sauce with cream & cheese or mascarapone & cheese to go with broccoli or cauliflower. I’ve made zucchini/ courgette fritters, & courgette alfredo. Also tahini- I love it, have it on vegetables, or you could do a satay with peanut butter.
There are so many lovely recipes online, dietdoctor.com & ruled.me , & on this site too, like the fathead or matthead pizza recipes.
Hope this helps!
If you don’t or haven’t tried it, just be aware that there is a percentage of people out there that cannot digest quorn. I’m one of them. I’ll be hurlin’ n pukin’ n squirtin’ within an hour or two after eating and it’s NOT pretty!
I would suggest that if it’s new, try it at a time when you’re not having to be in the public eye or at any important event shortly thereafter. You may be just fine. But if by chance you don’t do well with it either, you’ll appreciate not having to look like you’re just fine when you’re not.
FWIW…
I use soy protein isolate. The isolate means that the valuable amino acids have been isolated from the crappier contents of the soy… which makes it a bit more expensive, but better quality.
You can add it to your cooking.
Hey, here’s a vegetarian newbie question for you: are mushrooms allowed in keto? What’s their carb content?
Well, if google is right, mushrooms are allowed… I ADORE mushrooms - especially fried in lots of butter and with some parsely on top… YUMMMMM
You could go mushroom crazy if you like them? : )
One site I looked at said that 6oz have 4g carb in them, (net, I think) some of the sites do seem to vary with carb content.
Portobello mushrooms grilled with grilled halloumi on the top?
People will answer (yes, they are fine) but if you don’t already have a go to nutrition tracking app/website, you should get one. The big 3 are LoseIt, MyFitnessPal and Cronometer. All have sufficiently functional free versions on mobile or web. Some people do lazy keto (no tracking, intuitive) BUT almost always after doing proper tracking long enough to know what works by foods and amounts.
Wife is starting as lazy keto with a food list, but is quickly realizing the need to log for a while to get the feel.
This is sound advice and folks would be well advised to follow it.
Thanks for the tip
I’ll start tracking straight away as I haven’t been tracking either
