Vegetarian Keto fail. Sad and desperate for help

I love my meat - but haven’t quite wrapped my mind around the argument. Assume every living thing feels pain. You raise animals humanely, that’s great. But what about the rest of us that cannot do so, or cannot even afford grass fed whatever. I try not to think about it, but some of that meat is raised and slaughtered inhumanely. Is there no difference between a plant feeling pain and cows terrified before slaughter? I am not being flippant - I truly want to know.

Great advice for all newbies, Bunny, thanks for posting.

From what I understand the argument is as follows:

  1. Its possible, even likely, that plants feel pain
  2. Animals definitely experience fear, pain and suffering

Conclusion: nothing matters and we should eat and torture each other with reckless abandon

Going along with @Regina I do keto but under CROSS FIT (Paleo) guidelines and pair a carb up on sundays. Many ways to do keto! but yes make sure to get enough FAT and Protein=
Fat too train your body to burn it! and protein for your muscles girl! but refrain from tofu,vegan meat subs and other processed veggie-esc diet substitutes. For now I would limit your veggie carbs down to only leafy greens and embrace the eggs (Modified EGG fast) with absolutely no dairy … Yes I said it, Dairy in my opinion is for baby cows and infants along with the fact cheese and cream contain my worst enemy (Caesin Intolerant) AKA the slowest digesting protein leaving you with a slight elavation in insulin until fully digested 6-12 hours. So I would reccomend sticking too eggs and leafy greens along with as much oil ( Olive, Coconut, Avacado{whole or oil}

Yeah pretty much, Its the cost of life or in other words effect…

In order for a cell to divide it requires the sacrifice of the membrane and energy

make that membrane and energy as an analogy to the cost of an entire organisms life for your own survival.

Its natures most basic rule and my favorite

The total amount of energy and matter in the Universe remains constant, merely changing from one form to another. The First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation) states that energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed. …

therefore the only thing your doing by concluding “nothing matters and we should eat and torture each other with reckless abandon” is that your somberly just attaching “EMOTION” too the complex way energy is transferd in OUR world.

I was kind of trying to create a ridiculous, straw man version of the argument so it’s kind of funny that you agreed with me.

Seriously though, I think the move from “plants might feel pain” to “we shouldn’t be concerned at all about the ethics of torturing animals” is pretty much one of the biggest logical jumps a person can make.

EXACTLY,Well said! :v:

I’m on my first dairy free week in my life and feel great. Was going over the carb limit with all the dairy. But not to say I will never have dairy in moderation again. My point is, we all have to find our own way, based on age, gender, medical conditions, fitness level.

(Cristian Lopez) #29

Of coarse and dont forget to study the benefits of Non-dairy, possibly you could even cycle some weeks with dairy and some with out, As for me I follow up on refilling glycogen stores on Sundays once a week with
8 Sweet potatoes, 9 beets, and 6 resistant starch cold potatoes and 4 boiled green plantains along with an entire pack of brown rice cakes and a load of low fat sea food and non-dairy protein powder shakes

Its kinda cool because my body is trained to run on fat and on these once a week Lowfat carb loads I can still burn body fat, refill muscle glycogen, and gain weight in the form of muscle!!

*Note I am a youth cross-fit calisthenic / lifter so I dont recommend anyone else doing what I do

How in gods name do you choke down 14 potatoes and 9 beets in one day? Good lord, man. I would probably just binge on Ritz crackers and milk.

(Rita) #32

Seed crackers from real meal revolution 2.0 are delicious. Especially with a generous pat of butter!

(Empress of the Unexpected) #33

Have seriously considered that. But ten weeks on keto were kind of wasted when I realized that I was bouncing in and out of ketosis due to the extra carbs from my dairy addiction. I think at some point I will need occasional an occasional carb up, especially as I am trying to grow some muscle! But will now need to wait until finally fat adapted.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #34

Sounds yummy and satisfying. Wonder if they have them in the US. Will try to find an equivalent.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #35

No, triscuits and milk! That was my pre-keto poison.

#36

I would absolutely annihilate a box of triscuits. So buttery and good.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #37

Yeah, but not so great when you do it at three o clock in the morning every night, with four glasses of milk. Stopped that cold turkey when I went keto. Loving the extra sleep and weight loss.

pshhh Golden Graham Crackers and banana slices were like crack 2 me!

Hi! My mom isn’t a fan of protein and started keto: so here’s what I learned from observing her-

  1. If you are indeed looking primarily for weight loss (which isn’t what keto is. It’s a side effect of the process, but not the process itself) like I did and many do, then it’s important you TRACK EVERYTHING. A mouthful of chocolate won’t do. Measure it. You’d be surprised to see the amount of carbs in raw, unsweetened cocoa powder. If possible make your own chocolates, that way you’ll know the macros/serving.
  2. Have you tried intermittent fasting? It really helps in weight loss, at least for me
  3. Mayo is really really a good option. Add coconut flakes, almond flour etc in your dessert.
  4. Some say calories aren’t important. I find it useful to track things I eat. I also don’t eat if I’m not hungry. I also check if I’m REALLY hungry when I feel like eating- maybe have a glass of water and see if that satiates you.
  5. Add ACV to your diet
  6. Try not having sugar. At all. Period.
  7. You can check out Dr Berg or other lectures on YouTube. See if it helps
PS I know that feeling: one month, I had too much fat and I didn’t know what I did wrong but I gained a lot of weight. See, I wasn’t active at all and I was binge eating on nuts, cheese and stuff late at night. And it becomes difficult to stop eating because of my OCD. So I forced myself to break that loop.
Cheers! Don’t get disheartened! Trust the process and give it some time.

@GigiFusc why are you reducing fat??? Keto is High Fat/Low Carb. It’s NOT low fat. It’s not LCLF it’s LCHF.

Around 80% of your macros should be fat - and during the first six weeks it’s super critical in order to become reasonably “fat adapted” ie, a fat burner instead of a sugar/carb burner.

Yes, you can do LCHF/keto vegetarian, just will involve lots of eggs n’ dairy and supplements like COQ10 and probably Vit. D3 and magnesium (I take angstrom Mag) - along with tons of salt!

The indian keto kitchen youtube and website “Headbanger’s Kitchen” has lots of vegetarian keto recipes (it’s not all veg though).

Highly recommend the book “The Art & Science of Low Carbohydrate Living” by Dr. Stephen Phinney & Jeff Volek PhD. - along with “Ketone Power” by Romanian researcher Cristi Vlad. I found it very helpful to have handy books to read and re-read during my first six months of keto. Also, the use of ‘bulletproof coffee/tea’ with 2 tablespoons coconut oil and/or butter plus heavy cream is a great way to start the day with fat and postpone your first meal of the day, which helps increase enzymes and also just makes life easier!
