Vacation and trying to at least maintain

(Mel Simpson) #1

I’m on vacation in Disneyland with my family. Feeling great but decided to go off intuitive keto for the vacation however still do IF. I am about 7 pounds from my goal and have been for the past 6 weeks give or take a couple of pounds. There is no scale at the hotel and I am worried I’m going to be creeping back on the pounds!! Wondering how everyone else handles time away? I am fasting anywhere frosm 16 to 22 hours so far. Last night went for dinner and ate pretty much keto but then had a few bites of dessert. When we left the restaurant I had so much gastric pain it was awful…I felt terrible. My husband IFs too so that makes it easy. He does not do keto which makes it a bit more challenging.
I know people will say get off the scale but that is how I stay accountable. I am forced to stay off the scale for 2 weeks so we shall see how that goes!!
One win…went to buy waterproof pants (its pouring here) and the guy handed me a couple of pants after looking at me and said here you go small petite. Whoo hoo. We are just starting our vacation!!!

Just make conscious choices when eating, continue your IF, and try to enjoy your vacation. Progress, not perfection. You can hit it hard when you get back.

If the hotel has an exercise room, it may have a scale in it. Just saying. Might be better just to not weigh until you get home.

It might not be good to mix keto and non-keto.

If you go off keto - go off and stay off until the vacation is over.

The point is, you want to avoid having your regular keto meals (extra butter, fatty meats etc.) mixed with carbs (which spike insulin). This puts you in the worst situation of your body wanting to store fat and you supplying the extra large keto sized portions of fat to store.

On the other hand, eating some of your old favorites, but in the smallest portions you can manage, will probably do less damage.

There maybe something to what @RobC is saying. If you’re eating carbs on a daily basis. I just returned from 7 weeks in Florida, staying keto about 95% of the time but I did make some compromises eating out a few times and had tequila, bourbon and vodka occasionally and champagne a couple of times. I came home 8lbs. heavier and lost it again in 10 days. I think it was mostly water retention from my last blowout meal. I don’t think you’re really going to put on significant weight in two weeks as long as you don’t just throw it all to the wind and overdo it.

I think you’ll maintain just fine if you avoid the carbs. A couple months ago when I went on vacation, I told myself – just avoid the carbs – but I didn’t worry about how much I was eating, try to restrict, obsess about not knowing what my weight was for a week, etc… and I came back 2 pounds lighter. I was so surprised, I told myself, from now on… that’s it, that’s how I’m gonna live my life. I’m just gonna avoid the carbs (and eat adequate fat to keep me full)! So simple.

No workout room or scale here. Part of the problem but it is a bot freeing not weighing every or every 2nd day

Disneyland for food would be tough.

I bet you are walking a ton though! When we went to Greece last November, I did try the yogurt, a piece of pita here, a very small spanakopita there. We probably ate more veggies/salad there than I do here. I managed to not gain - I’m sure the walking played a big part in that.

You really don’t have to worry since it’s so short of a time.

Just like when you began Keto, it’s all about Glycogen. Your body has to completely refill glycogen before it even begins to think of storing fat. Or making any of the adaptive hormonal adjustments that facilitate fat storage.

It usually takes several weeks or even months of carb consumption for that to happen.

I ate carbs for metabolic purposes from Thanksgiving through New Year. I made sure I never ate enough to completely refill glycogen. I lost my glycogen weight within about ten days after New Years, and am down another six pounds since. I do eat carbs on the weekends now to keep my metabolism healthy.
